Holbert A. Harris indeed moved to Newton county, Arkansas, and died in August, 1862, while a member of the 2nd Arkansas Infantry Regiment (USA); however, I'm told his brother Benjamin F. Harris remained in Alabama, and served with the 18th Alabama Sharpshooter Battalion.

Holbert A Harris (1819-1862) had two sons, the eldest named Benjamin F. Harris and the younger named Richard Asa Harris.

You may already have this information, but Michael Doherity (sp) died March 15, 1935 in Jefferson County, AL. He was buried at Elmwood Cemetery on March 18, 1935. His death certificate # is 5961. He was born about 1868 according to info on the death certificate.

I found that info online and have not looked for Edmond yet. I will try to find an obit for him when I go back to the Birmingham Library. Do you want a copy?

Kim Self Hughes

Rogers (Dec 22, 1873 - Feb 15, 1943) buried there, along with an Alice J. Rogers (March 13, 1874 - Dec 31, 1951).

If you haven't found the cemetery, I can give you directions.

Kim Self Hughes

Whisenhunt Woodruff, Woolf

Sometime on the 1970's, a lady named Johnnie Mae Whisenhunt came to Arkansas in search of my Grandfather John Grover Cleveland Woodruff. She was a descendant of one of my grandfather's sisters and was putting together a family tree (The old way where it was truly difficult) Ms. Whisenhunt brought my grandfather back to Trussville for a few weeks, but after she brought him back home to Arkansas, no one has had any contact with the Alabama part of the family since. My Grandfather passed away in 1979 and no one else had any way of staying in contact with Ms. Whisenhunt.

I am trying to locate her or any of her descendants who may have the family tree information. I have found a SS death record for a Johnnie M. Whisenhunt who lived in Trussville, Al, but that is all I can find.

My Great Grandfather was John W. Woodruff married to Mary McCurly Presswood. They lived in Oaklevel Cleburne Co. in 1880 with child Margaret (Maggie).

In 1900 They were in Polk Co. Georgia with children Dove, Grover, Jefferson, Turner, and Hattie. Maggie either lived in the same house or next door with husband Nat Woolf, and children Lula and May Bell.

In 1910 my grandfather Grover lived in Lincoln Parish Louisiana as the head of house, along with his parents John W. and Mary, brother Turner, sister Hattie Swain, Hattie's daughter Clara Belle, and his deceased sister Maggie Woolf's youngest child Maggie E. Woolf.

Along the way we lost all contact with the following:
We have no idea who was the parents of John W. Woodruff born 1849-1858.
There was a 7th child of John W. and Mary Woodruff who we have no idea of their name due to the 1890 census being destroyed.
Jefferson Woodruff left home after 1900 and was never heard from again, story direct from my grandfather.
Dove Woodruff disappeared after 1900. Probably married. We did find a Dove Forehand who married about the right time, but not sure.

I have no idea how Johnnie Mae Whisenhunt ties into the family but with the missing members, it is very important to me.

Thanks in advance! I did type this up in paragraphs, but it is posting how it wants to.

Ellen,
RC Lenoir son of William & Ann Lenoir was Robert Calvin Lenoir b. 11 November 1820 died 16 November 1891 and is buried at Isabella Church Cemetery. The Robert C Lenoir who later changed his name to Robert Lee Clinton was born 1863 died 1915 was NOT the son of William & Ann Lenoir but was a grandson. Robert C Lenoir b. 1863 was the son of William Thomas Lenoir b. 1835 & Rebecca Latham. William Thomas Lenoir b. 1835 was a son of William & Ann Lenoir. The RCL that you are referring to was actually a nephew of Robert Calvin Lenoir b. 11 Nov 1820.

They are both from the same family. One is a descendant of William & Ann Lenoir through son William Thomas Lenoir b. 1832 & Rebecca Latham. The other is also a descendant of William & Ann Lenoir through son Robert Calvin Lenoir b. 11 Nov 1820 & Emmaline Jones. I have information on both. I descend from William & Ann Lenoir's daugther Martha Ann Lenoir Hicks. My Great Aunt was married to one of the Great Grandson's of Robert Calvin Lenoir b. 1820

Kennedy 1900 Census Jefferson County, Alabama.

My greatgrandmother was named Sarah Francis Kennedy Whitten. She was called Fannie. She was married to James Austin Whitten, Sr., in South Carolina, where she was born. In about 1890, she and many in her family moved from the Abbeville/Laurens area of SC to Jefferson County, Alabama.

I have been at a loss to identify any of her family, but using the 1900 Census, as I did today, I think I have made some headway. According to this Census, there was a Bolliver Kennedy living in Jefferson County in 1900, who was born in South Carolina, as were both his parents. I looked at the census page, and I am not sure about the spelling of his name. This is the way the Census transcribers spelled it, and it IS something like that. In 1900, he was 74 years old, having been born in 1826. His wife was name Mary, and she too was born in SC, as were both of her parents. She was 62, having been born in 1837. Also living in the household was a son, Thomas B. Kennedy, was 34 years old.

What makes me think that this is Fannie Kennedy's family, other than the fact that they were all born in SC, and that they lived in the right section of Jefferson County, and that the ages are right, is that I know there is a Thomas B. Kennedy associated with her.

I had thought that Thomas B. Kennedy was her father, and maybe her father was named Thomas Bolliver Kennedy, but just used the Bolliver in the Census.

According to my father's cousin, who remembers them some, Thomas B. Kennedy was married to Molly, and had sons named Will and Tom, and a daughter named Maude. Perhaps there was a daughter named Fannie, or perhaps that name referred to his sister. I am not sure.

These people lived in west Jefferson County, in the area known as Powderly. The older Kennedy was an iron-ore miner, and died, according to my father's cousin, of face cancer.

James Austin Whitten, Sr., died in a mining accident in 1893. Sometime after that, Fannie Kennedy Whitten took her three small children, Susie A, Mamie, and Austin, back to Laurens, SC to keep house for her father-in-law. In the 1900 Census, they were all living with him, C.T. Whitten, in Laurens. He was apparently very difficult to get along with, and several years after that, all four of them moved back to Jefferson County.

Sometime soon after 1900, Mamie Whitten, who was my grandmother, married my grandfather, Arthur Gardiner, and the rest, as they say, is history.

I would be interested in hearing from anyone who knows anything about any of these people.

Thanks!

I hope you are still around! I think I can clear some of this up for you. Michael Bolivar Kennedy was my 3GGF. He was born in Abbeville SC in 1826, son of Michael and Agness Carlile Kennedy (I can get you more on them). Michael's first wife was Eliza M. Barksdale. I am descended from their daughter, Mary Jane "Mollie" Kennedy. In 1856, Eliza Barksdale died in childbirth and M. B. Kennedy later married a cousin of Eliza, Mary Frances Barksdale in 1862. They had 2 children that I know of, Thomas B. Kennedy, b. Jan 1866 and Sarah F. Kennedy, b. c1863. I have no more on Sarah, but wonder if she is your "Fannie". Michael B. Kennedy moved to Birmingham in late 1800's and died in 1909. His son, Thomas B. moved with him. He apparently married a Mollie and had at least 4 children, Maude; Thomas B., Jr.; William D. and Fannie (check 1920 US Census for Jefferson County, AL), which all fits with your cousin's memory. Thomas B. apparently died in 1924 and his wife Mollie in 1937 (I haven't confirmed this, it could be an amazing coincidence, but likely I have the right ones).

I really don't know. What I did was go through Census reports and list the Kennedys that I found year by year in the Census. Since wives' maiden names aren't listed there, I just don't know.

If you know the name of any particular Kennedy man who would have been listed in any Census between 1800 and 1900, in those counties of SC, I can find him in my material, but I don't have Smiths. If you know the wife's first name, I might be able to find it, depending on her name!

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

BYRLICH,

Note that the index referenced in a previous reply does NOT extend to 2001. More recent Bham News obituaries (approx. 1993 forward) can be accessed via Newsbank IF your library has a subscription OR via genealogybank.com if YOU have a subscription... that said, here you go:

Birmingham News (AL) - January 8, 2001
Deceased Name: NEWPORT, MARSHALL L.
NEWPORT, MARSHALL L., 76, of Tarrant City, AL, died January 7, 2001.
If you will send the date and the name of the newspaper in which the obit appeared -- and it's one that is available on the microfilm at the Birmingham Public Library -- I will try to find it for you.

SOME newspapers are on microfilm and if you've ever worked with that medium, you know it's a slow process. Once located, the particular obit is "tweaked" to produce as good a hard copy print as possible. Then it's transcribed to the computer and posted. This is a time-consuming task.

You will find an obituary index in the databases section of the Jefferson County Library Cooperative's website.

Good luck!
