I'm seeking info on the Hodges families in Hardin Co, KY. You mentioned James Henry Hodges, is he from Hardin Co, KY? And whom were his parents? I can connect to one Hodges whom lived in Hardin Co, KY in 1840, then was in LaRue Co, in 1850 -simply because of it's becoming a county from part of Hardin Co in 1843. Then the family is found in Hart Co, KY, but the other Hodges families are still in Hardin Co. I cannot make a connection to them. One was a Fielden Hodges with children: William, Henry B married Catherine Harrington, Mary M married Thomas Fife, Jane T married Harrison Fife, and Mildred married Thomas Durham.

Any help on the Hodges would be appreciated.

Thanks

I am the GGGGGGG Granddaughter of John Wimp Sr. The relationship of John and his son Jesse Wimp is hard to come by. I know that Jesse was born in 1802 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. After his mother Rosina died in 1809 the family moved on to Meade County, Kentucky. Jesse was one of the people who helped decide the roadways in the Meade area near Brandenburg. Jesse had siblings named John Jr., William, Daniel, James, Rachel, Ephraim, Mary, Harriet and Benjamin. Jesse was one of the youngest. I have seen court documentation that includes Jesse and his siblings. They never actually connect them as siblings though. William and Jesse both married Simmons girls and they had law suits involving their mother-in-law Charity Simmons and Blancet Shacklett. I am looking for any "legal" connection between John Wimp Sr (his dad) and Jesse Wimp weather it be a land deed, Will, something that mentions them as father and son. I also would love a copy of the Will of Joseph Simmons. There might be a mention of Jesse in it. Joseph Simmons being the husband of Charity and the father-in-law of Jesse and William. William was the Administrator of the estate because Charity Simmons did not want to be. Any help would be great. Thanks. Katherine Masters

Yes I know exactly where this cemetary is and have been there many times. I have many ancesters buried there going back as far as the 1700's. It is very old, but still being used today for buriels. It located off of HWY 213 just between "Furnace Mountain" And "Cobhil" The road is marked by an old sign but is best identified by the large blue green water tower. Its about a mile or so out that road. Good louck!

I just received the Winter 2009 issue of Ancestral Trails today and read the article on pg 255, John Carr- Early Settler in Kentucky- Part I.

I'd be interested in corresponding with Christina Leuken, the author of the article, but haven't kept the issue that gave member information.

My 4ggmother was Rachel Carr, who is on the John Carr descendency chart on pg 258. She was a daughter of John Carr. She was born abt 1761 in Frederick Co, MD near where the battle of Antietem was fought. She married David Grable, also from Frederick, MD. Both their families came from MD to Fayette Co, PA and then down to KY early. David Grable and Francis Shain were granted a VA Land Grant for 500 acres on Crooked Creek in what is now the Southern Part of Bullitt Co, near Belmont. Their home was finished in 1797 and still stands, restored and still in use as a vacation home by the present owners.

I was very glad to see the Carr article and would like to correspond with the author. My grandfather was born in Louisville in 1880 and was an avid genealogist and visited the Bullitt Co Grable relatives about 1900 to interview them about family history. He asked them all they could remember about the Grable ancestors and that was the beginning of our research on the Grable/Carr family.

Pat,

I think you are on the right track, here is what I posted in reply to another post about Henry Townsend:

"I just read your post from Mercer County, KY 2001 "Townsends of NC to KY," about Henry Townsend and Deborah Wiser; I am searching for the parents of Moses
Townsend b. 1772, who is said to have come from Shelby Co., Ky, but I suspect he comes from Mecklenburg, NC; and here's why:

I am a Townsend by birth, so my Y Chromosome DNA, matches to any other male Townsend from my line; I did in fact send my DNA off to the Townsend Society of America to see who I matched with. I matched exactly with a 97 year old man,
Ray Townsend. Ray's oldest known ancestor was William Townsend b. abt 1750-1760 in Mecklenberg, NC and was married to Elizabeth McGraw. They had quite a few
children, several of whom married the children of William Voyles who was a "wilderness friend" of William and I suspect that they fought in the Revolution together (based on several internet records). These Townsend's and Voyles,
migrated to Harrison County, Indiana, which is also where my Great-great-great grandfather Moses, eventually migrated to, according to a 1790 census record.
So, I suspect that your Henry Townsend, may have been a brother to my Moses Townsend, who both may be sons or brothers to William (Depending upon his actual
birth, I have seen his birth shown as 1750 & 1760).

This is only a hypothosis, but the fact that Henry lived in Shelby Co., Kentucky and is only a year older than Moses, who is also from Shelby and connected by
DNA to William from Mecklenburg, leads me to believe they were related. Especially since the population of these areas in that time, were only several thousand, the odds are high."

Moses is also my GGG-Grandfather, through his son William (b. 1809), then William's son Joseph Boyer Townsend.

Joe Townsend
Hi, I just read your post. I don't know if you are familiar with Marion County but it is where several Catholics migrated. I do believe that the Calvary Female Institution is a girl's catholic school. I am not for certain. You may want to contact the Gethsemene Abbey about the history of the Calvary Female Institution. I know that there are a few monks who are knowledgeable about the history of the area. My relatives were from the area as well and very much Catholic. You may also want to contact the Louisville Archdiocese to find where early church records may be located.
Hopefully, someone will reply to your post who has specific info for you. If you do not live in the area, let me know and I can try to find info for you as I live in KY.

K

Lost MIDDLEHURST Family 1862-1871

Middlehurst family History
C1841 - 1862

In tracing my family tree, the earliest ancestral facts I have so far found have been that my family, MIDDLEHURST were Catholics and lived as Tenants of one of the largest farms in the area at Bamfurlong Hall Farm, Abram, near Ashton in Makerfield, Lancashire, UK, at 210 acres, according to the 1841 Census. We do not, as yet, know the date they arrived there, or from where.
William Middlehurst b1781 married 29th September 1808, Jane Rawlinson b1786 in Sephton (Sefton) and is listed as a farmer, they had at least 12 children we know of. These were;- John?1805, James?1807, Ann?1808, William 1811abt, Peter 1816abt, Mary 1816abt, John 1816abt, Jane 1822, Thomas 1825 (my line),Margaret 1826abt, Elizabeth 1828abt most dates approx due to rounding, those with question marks as yet not confirmed.

Thomas Middlehurst b1825/6, married 18 October 1847, Elizabeth Adamson birth date stated as 1826 (I recently found that she was in fact born in 1828 and must have fibbed for the marriage!), her father was John Adamson, a blacksmith from Town Green, Ashton in Makerfield. They married in St Johns Chapel Wigan.
In 1849 they emigrated to New Orleans in America with son Henry 3 & Thomas’s sister Jane.
We have been able to trace Thomas arriving in New Orleans, Louisiana, on 20th February 1849, aged 25 on the ship Margaret. National Archives ref M259-30. His name miss-spelt as ‘Middtersint’.
Elizabeth, Jane and Henry immigrated into America in New Orleans on July 12 1849 from Liverpool on the Blake (a Barque) NA No M259-31. No trace of any other family members.
Then they appear in the 1850 Census, Jane as a Nun 4th District 7th Ward Louisville Jefferson County, dwelling 287, Magdallen Asylum for Destitute Females. (the 10th Nun of the order in America).
Francis, Elizabeth and Henry, are shown at dwelling 1055, but again no trace of Thomas. (Francis does not appear again but was a possible cousin who disappeared from the 1851 English census but is on the 1841 and 1861, as yet no record of passage to confirm his trip).
In 1852 Thomas is listed in the Louisville City Directory as a Cartman, in the 1855/6 Directory as a Teamster and in the 1859 Directory as a Canalman (this would have been on the Louisville-Portland Canal that by-passes the Ohio river falls/rapids) and they lived “front, between Tobacco and Jackson” which is on the Island in the river bounded by the Canal. (see Google Earth).
In the 1859-61 Directory he is shown as a Labourer and was living in the Portland and Shippingport area of the city, which is on the river shore opposite the Island next to the canal.
In 1853 he appeared before the Jefferson County Court to begin his Naturalisation Citizenship of the US. He became a Citizen in 1855.
In 1860 they are again recorded, this time Thomas, Elizabeth, sons Thomas and John, but no Henry, dwelling 838, Louisville 8th Ward page no 125 -669. Henry was buried on 24th April 1858 aged 10 at Our Lady of the Port Catholic Church. John Henry was born abt 2nd July 1858 and baptised on the 4th July.
We have recently learned from the “shadyladies” researching graveyards that two unnamed children, of the family, were buried in St John Cemetery at 26th and Duncan close to Shippingport on 4th September 1852 and 24th August 1854 we know nothing else about them.
The last record of the family was the 1862 Jefferson County Property Tax List for the Western District of Louisville.

Then NOTHING! The family story has it that sometime between 1862 and the 1871 Census in England, they were on a Wagon Train and were attacked by Indians. The three sons born in America survived, subsequently finding their way to England where they stayed initially with a family ‘Cunliffe’ who had lived next door to the Adamson’s in earlier times and were friends of Elizabeth.
Thomas, John and James were recorded in the English Census in 1871 as boarders. And we have traced their history from then on.

Can anyone help with the history of my family in America? We are not having much luck, it seems like it was a very turbulent time and if they were on a Wagon Train they could have been far away from Kentucky when their fate befell them, in fact they may have been in the (wild) West at this time, (or in fact the closest massacre was the Minnesota massacre, but I have been unable to find any lists of victims names), to have become involved with Indians, but would the events have been recorded? Where? And how can we pursue our quest to find out what happened? The only suggestions we have that make sense is to look through all the Newspapers of the time, a mammoth task even if we could afford (which we cannot) the trip to the States!
Their history in America is patchy until 1862 when they vanish, except Jane, who is recorded as being ‘of feeble health’, the Nun who was 10th in the Order in America! Taking her vows on 24th October 1853. She died in a Convent on Bank St, Cincinnati, on 1st January 1869 aged 47. Did she in fact help the Boys after the Massacre?
With such an uncommon name you would think that it would be easy to trace the family, but that has not been the case, I do hope you can help us. Many thanks in anticipation.
Hi,

I am looking for information about this institution listed in the census for Marion County Kentucky in 1850. The census lists residents, and one could be an ancestor of mine. The name and age are right. I would like to know what type of institution this was and where I might find more info about the residents.

I've been trying to find this ancestor's family and this information could be extremely helpful as I have found a family which could be hers in 1850 census, except that she isn't listed! If she were in this institution that year, it would explain her absence.

I've written to a couple of places, libraries, historical societies, and have received no response. Where can I find info about this place, or who can I contact that might be able to help??

Thanks.

Thank you for writing and I appreciate the confirmation about Nancy "Brooks". I had seen that, too but no proof. Do you have some sources that you could share on that line?

So, your William B. 1827 is not the son of my William?

Yes, I wondered if her name was misspelled (especially since Livonia has had every spelling variation known!haha!) and the marriage bond date of 1856 also seems like a mistake (she would have been 10). If you'd like to correspond privately, send an email to tkwelch@yahoo.com

Look forward to hearing from you.
I am also a CRUMP descendant with a brickwall on my William B. CRUMP (1827-1897) from Hart Co. We know through the CRUMP DNA Project that the Edmonson Co. and Hart Co. CRUMPs are related.

Your William CRUMP, originally from Hart Co. (son of Joshua CRUMP, Sr. and Polly PATTERSON) married Nancy BROOKS on 30 Aug 1824 in Barren Co., KY. They had 13 children of whom your Livonia was the youngest. I did not know she died in TX...thanks for that information.

Livonia's middle name is different, however, I do not know its origin. Could it be that it has been misspelled through the years (even though that is the way I have always seen it spelled)?

The Hart and Edmonson Co. CRUMPs have many brickwalls.

Hello

I posted this on another thread, but perhaps some of these names/dates will connect to your Crumps.

My Crump line:

Livonia B (Blesamp) Crump b 3/26/1846 KY, married William Pleasant Furlong b 1/1/1840 KY. He died in Mammoth Cave, Edmonson Co. KY 1/29/1901 while she died in Texas July 26, 1920.

I know from her Marriage Certificate that her Father was William Crump b 1804 KY married to Nancy. According to the 1850 Census William/Nancy with children are listed in Brownsville, Edmonson Co. KY....Children are: Elizabeth, Mary Ann, Thomas, Martha, William H., Paradine, Livona.

Because of several "slight" discrepancies between census, marriage bond, etc on dates, I would love to find more info on family members and confirm that I have the right family/records.

Would love to correspond if we connect. Haven't been able to firmly go back further than William b 1804 because of all the William B Crumps that show up on census/etc in KY :)
