Funeral services for W E Trice, 85, who died at 10 am Friday at the home of his daughter, Mrs Jack Wilson, Nebo, were conducted at 2 pm today at Antioch church near Hanson. Elder J D Shain officiated. Burial was in Strum cemetery.

Surviving are the daughter, Mrs Wilson; brother, James Trice, Madisonville; two sisters, Miss Mattie Trice and Mrs Dolly Pate, both of Madisonville; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The body was taken last night to the Wilson home from Harris Funeral Home, 134 North Main street, to await the last rites.

Marion Jefferson Curneal, 69, retired farmer, died at 5 am Saturday in his home, Hanson pike, following a lingering illness.

Surviving are the widow, Mrs Estelle Curneal, two sons, Marvin Curneal, in the army in Italy; Arlin Curneal, Detroit; three daughters, Mrs Edgar Patterson, Mrs A L Patterson, both of Madisonville; Mrs James Carlisle, Detroit; brother, Sam Curneal, Indiana, sister, Mrs Clarence
Mitchell, Detroit, and eleven grandchildren.

Funeral will be conducted at 3 pm Monday in Olive Branch church, near Hanson. Rev. Maurice Davis, Owensboro, will officiate.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Former Slaughters Merchant Dies At 86

Slaughters, Jan. 14.-- Albert Conley, 86, former merchant of Slaughters, died at his home here about 1 am Wednesday after an illness of about two weeks of pneumonia.

He is survived by two nieces, Misses Ella and Georgia Conley, of Dixon. His wife passed away about one year ago.

Funeral services will be held at the Methodist church at Slaughters, of which he was a member, Friday afternoon with burial in the Slaughters
cemetery.

Chris Coffman, 81, retired Slaughters tobacconist, died at 7 am Thursday in a Nashville hospital following a long period of ill health. Surviving are eight children and other relatives. The body is at S T Harris Funeral Home, 224 North Main street, awaiting funeral arrangements.

Miss Mary Trice Dies At Mt. Pleasant
Special to the Banner.

Mt. Pleasant, Dec. 2.-- Miss Mary Trice, age 19 years, daughter of Mr and Mrs Tom Trice, died November 25. She united with the Methodist Church at this place about three weeks before her death. Mary was a good girl and liked by all who knew her. She was perfectly willing to die if it was the Lord's will.

The Sunday School has lost a faithful member and her teacher a bright pupil, but our loss is her gain. She leaves a father, mother, two sisters and one brother and a host of friends to mourn her loss.

Funeral and interment took place here Friday.

D F Siria, 67 Ex-Jailer, Dies

David Franklin Siria, 67, who retired as county jailer last January after serving four years, died at his home on Madisonville rfd 2 at 11:30 o'clock this morning after several years illness which began when he suffered a paralytic stroke while county jailer. He had been critically ill for several days and death was not unexpected.

Mr Siria had long been a democratic leader in Hopkins county, and was an unsuccessful candidate for the democratic nomination for jailer in the August, 1929, primary, being defeated by Herb Ligon. He had been a member the Antioch Primitive Baptish church for years.

Surviving Mr Siria are his widow, eight sons and four daughters. The sons are Erwin, George, Charles and Arthur Siria, Pleasant Grove section; E K, Cecil and Ruby Siria, Madisonville, and Joseph Siria, Dawson Springs. The daughters are Mrs Frank Vazey, Mrs Y W Buchanan, both of Bisbee, Arizona; Mrs Dottie Clayton, Manitou country, and Mrs Otho Tippett, Madisonville. One daughter, Mrs Mamie Beeny, first wife of Deputy Sheriff Elmer Beeny, died several years ago. Two brothers, Ed and Wade Siria, both of Chicago, and several sisters also survive.

Funeral services for B Arivett, 80, retired Nebo business man, who died at his home in Nebo, were conducted at 2 pm Sunday with Elder Gordon Herron, of Clay, officiating. Burial was in Union cemetery at Nebo.

Mr Arivett formerly operated a service station and garage at Nebo. He was a member of the Primitive Baptist church at Liberty.

Survivors include the widow, Mrs Dora Arivett; three daughters, Mrs B Lee Barwell, Mrs Carl Parish and Mrs Charles Samples, of Nebo; son, John M Arivett, Providence; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; sister, Mrs J B Prince, Madisonville, and five brothers, Joe and Herman Arivett, both of Detroit; R S, Willis and Tom Arivett, all of Madisonville.

Joe Jennings, 67, farmer, dies of acute indigestion at his home in the Oak Hill country at 5 o'clock Wednesday morning while sitting in a chair after eating breakfast. He is survived by his widow, one son, Elmer Jennings, Oak Hill country, and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the Mortons Gap Primitive Baptish church at 1 o'clock Thursday afternoon, Elder J D Shain, Madisonville, officiating. Burial will be in Flat creek cemetery.

Mrs Daisy B Clayton, 404 West Broadway, died in Hopkins County Hospital at 2:30 am today after an extended illness. She was 80.

Mrs Clayton was the widow of Bud Clayton, who died five years ago. They were married October 19, 1898.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs Clyde Owens, White's Creek, Tenn., and Mrs Evelny Branson, Sarasota, Fla.; three sons, Tommy Clayton, Indianapolis; Harvey Clayton, Madisonville; and Baxter Clayton, Amarillo, Texas; a sister, Mrs John Higdon, Madisonville route 2; and two brothers, Baxter Dame, Panama City, Fla., and Potter Dame, Granite City, Ill.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 am Saturday in Antioch church, west of Hanson, with Elder J D Shain, Madisonville, officiating. Burial will be in Olive Branch cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Cayce M Clayton, Roy Clayton, Johnnie Gammon, Arden Jewell Clayton, Irvin Dame, Roy Higdon, Lawrence Dame and Elmo Clayton.

The body was taken from Harris Funeral Home this afternoon to the Clayton residence to remain until 10 am Saturday, at which time it will be taken to the church.

Summers, a bachelor, is survived by two brothers, Beverly Summers, Madisonville rfd 3; David Summers, 217 North Kentucky avenue, Madisonville, and a sister, Mrs Zadie Powell, Madisonville, rfd 3.

Funeral will be conducted at 2 pm Wednesday in Madisonville Primitive church, South Kentucky avenue. Elder J D Shain, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Union cemetery, near Nebo.

Mrs Osborne, 77, Heart Victim

Mrs R G Osborne, 77, Calhoun route two, died at 2:15 am today in the home of a daughter Mrs N B Edwards, 428 North Scott street, as the result of a heart attack suffered at noon Sunday. Her condition had been critical since that time.

Mrs Osborne had been in Madisonville since January 1, at which time she came for a visit with her daughter and members of her family. She had been a frequent visiter in Madisonville.

Surviving besides the daughter here are three other daughters, Mrs H D Hunt, Calhoun route 2; Mrs August Ramming, Carmi, Ill., and Mrs Theodore Johnson, Maunie, Ill; and two brothers, Zalma Wright, San Antonio, Texas, and Caleb Wright, Beech Grove, Ky.

The body is at Muster Funeral Home in Calhoun and will remain there until funeral services are conducted at 2 pm Thursday in New Salem Primitive Baptist church at Wyman, Ky. Elder J D Shain, Madisonville, will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs Chloe T Cavanah Dies

Mrs Chloe T Cavanah, 96, Madisonville, died at 9:15 pm Thursday at Hopkins County Hospital. She was born in Webster county on July 7, 1889. Her husband, Perry W Cavanah, preceded her in death on November 3, 1923.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs John Clayton, 516 South Scott street; two sons, Dallas Cavanah Sr., 527 North Seminary, and George B Cavanah, 926 Grapevine Road; (a third son, Chesley Gammon Cavanah, died January 13 of this year); 12 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 pm Sunday at Harris Funeral Home, Elder J D Shain will officiate, assisted by Dr. C D Cole and Dr Harold J Purdy. Interment will be in Tirzah Cemetery in Webster county.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 o'clock tonight.

Stewart Sheffer, City Employe For 18 Years Dies

Stewart M Sheffer, 365 Race street, died in his sleep in Our Lady of Peace Hospital in Louisville at 5:30 am today.

Mr Sheffer, 68, suffered from a heart condition for a number of years, but death came unexpectedly. He had been admitted to the Louisville hospital Monday afternoon for treatment.

Mr Sheffer had been in the employ of the City of Madisonville for almost eighteen years, having been an employee of the street department. He was a member of First Baptist Church.

Born in Henderson county, he was the son of the late Charles and Emma Book Sheffer. The Sheffers came to Madisonville to make their home in 1934.

Surviving are the wife, Mrs Agnes Busby Sheffer, and a daughter, Mrs James Rash Claytor, South Franklin street.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 pm Friday at Barnett-Strother Funeral Home in South Main street, with the Rev. Rupert Utley officiating. Interment will be in Grapevine Cemetery.

The body will be brought here tonight. Friends may call at the funeral home after 8 am Thursday.

Mrs Sally Powell, 88, former Hopkins County resident, died Friday morning at the home of a granddaughter, Mrs Ralph Wynn in Evansville. Mrs Powell was a member of the Olive Branch Baptist Church near Hanson.

Besides Mrs Wynn, other survivors are two sons, Elvis Powell, Nortonville, and William Powell, Hawthorne, Fla; 14 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren and ten great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be donducted at 1 pm Sunday at Alexander Funeral Home in Evansville, with the Rev. H P Bibbert officiating. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery near Nortonville.

Mrs Nora Rickard, 220 Graves Street, died at 4:30 am today in Senior Citizen Nursing Home, where she had been a patient for the past two years. A member of Salem Primitive Baptist Church here, she was 83.

Surviving are the husband, J Henry Rickard, also a resident of Senior Citizen Home; four daughters, Mrs Virgil Beeny, 227 West Noel avenue; Mrs Paul Lyons, 355 West Broadway; Mrs Walker Clayton, 244 Spring Lake; and Mrs Delmer Utterback, Tucker School Road; four sons, Arvil Rickard, 241 Kentucky avenue; Morton Rickard, Madisonville route 5; Arian Rickard, Henderson; and J C Rickard, 133 Nisbet Street; a brother, J R Clayton, also a resident of Senior Citizen Home; and 24 grandchildren, and 29 great-grandchildren.

Brain Surgery Fatal--
Tuell D Ashby Dies At 49

Tuell D Ashby, 124 South Kentucky avenue, for 27 years associated with the Madisonville post office, died in St Thomas Hospital in Nashville, Tenn., at 3:45 am today as result of brain surgery he underwent last week. He was 49.

Mr Ashby was admitted to the Nashville hospital on November 7 and underwent surgery for removal of a brain tumor on the following day. His condition had become critical yesterday.

An overseas veteran of World War II, seeing extensive service in the European theater of operations, he was born September 15, 1913. He was appointed a temporary mail carrier with the post office here in October of 1935 and in July of 1937 became a regular carrier. He had been with the post office since that time except for time out for military service from May of 1943 until March of 1946.

He was a member of Madisonville First Methodist Church; of the Elks Lodge; Bailey Pride, Jr. Post 5480, Veterans of Foreign Wars; and Hopkins County Post 6, American Legion.

Arrangements Incomplete
Surviving are the wife, a daughter, Marcia Jean, a freshman at Madisonville High School; mother Mrs Fred Ashby, 19 South Kentucky avenue; and an aunt, Mrs Goldie Haywood of 336 East Center street.

Funeral arrangements had not been completed at noon today. The body is at Barnett-Strother Funeral Home in South Main street, where friends may call after 7 o'clock tonight.

Mrs Edith Ilene Webster, 48, of Nortonville, died at 12:20 am today in Hopkins County Hospital after a year's illness.

Mrs Webster was born in Hopkins County on March 11, 1914, the daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Pearl C Lutz, of Manitou. She was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church of White Plains.

Surviving are the husband, Leslie Webster; a son, Duane Webster, Topeka, Kansas; two daughters, Mrs Thomas L Howard, 655 Jones avenue, Madisonville, and Mrs Jimmy Whittaker, Nortonville; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs John Reid, 16 Boggess Bouldvard, Madisonville, and Mrs Henry Sullivan, 320 Spring Lake, Madisonville, five brothers, Raymond Lutz, 645 Victoria, Madisonville, Douglas and A W Lutz, Manitou, Lonnie Lutz, Homewood, Madisonville, and the Rev. Funeral services have been set 10 am Thursday at Harris Funeral Home, with the Rev. Archie Oliver and the Rev. Leslie Baker officiating. Burial will be in New Salem Cemetery near Nortonville.

Claude Cates, Retired Mail Carrier, Dies

Claude Medlock Cates, 76, Nortonville, a retired rural mail carrier, died in Hopkins County Hospital here at 1:15 am today. He had suffered a stroke last July.

Mr Cates was born near Nebo July 16, 1882, and lived there until going to Nortonville 38 years ago. He had carried mail on Nortonville route 1 for 38 years. He was a member of the Concord General Baptist church at Manitou.

Former Hanson Man Dies In Missouri

Finis Jones, age 32, who with his wife and one child left Hanson several days ago for Arkansas to reside, was stricken with influenza and died at Dexter, Mo., while visiting relatives. The body was shipped to Slaughters, where interment took place. Mr Jones was the son of Dock Jones of Cox's store.

Mrs Jones who was also stricken with influenza is improving.

Mrs Mourning Barnett Dies

Mrs Mourning Hall Barnett, 64, a member of a prominent Hopkins County family, died suddenly in her apartment at 148 East Bradway shortly after 9 o'clock this morning from a heart attack.

Mrs Barnett, the widow of Thomas H Barnett, well-known funeral director here during his lifetime, had suffered from a heart condition for a number of years and had had several severe attacks. Today's seizure was sudden and death came almost instantly.

Born in Hopkins County in 1897, she was the daughter of the late William Jabus Hall, and of Mrs Cordelia Ann Trathen Hall, whose home is in Harrig street here.

Mrs Barnett, who was a member of Madisonville First Christian church, had been associated with W Fred Strother in the operation of Barnett-Strother Funeral Home in South Main street for a number of years, until ill health recently forced her retirement from active participation in the business.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs Chester Crumbaker, Danville, Ky., and Mrs Roy Schmetzer, Lake street, Madisonville; six grandchildren; the mother, Mrs Hall; a sister, Mrs Gail Hall Brown of Ormond Beach, Fla., a stepson, William L Barnett, Madisonville; an aunt, Mrs Fannie Wilkins, Grapevine Road; an uncle, Fred Trathen, Arch street Madisonville; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements have not been completed. Friends may call at Barnett-Strother Funeral Home after noon Wednesday.

Funeral services were held today at 2:30 pm at the Nortonville Holiness Church with the Rev. Amos R Jackson officiating. Burial was in New Salem Cemetery. Bandy Funeral Home was in charge.

Mrs Mary Arnold Dies At Age 73

Mrs Mary Susan Arnold, 73, died at 9:30 am today in the home of a daughter, Mrs Martha Noel, Madisonville rfd 2, following three years of ill health. Death resulted from a liver ailment and came after three days of serious illness.

Mrs Arnold was the last of eleven children born to Matthew and Mary Yarbrough Daniel, who came to Hopkins county from North Carolina. She had been a member of the Tirza Primitive Baptist church since she was fourteen years old.

Surviving are two sons, Herman Arnold, Lexington; Johnny Arnold, Hanson rfd 2, and five daughters, Mrs Irma Siria, Madisonville rfd 2; Mrs George Siria, Hanson street, Madisonville; Mrs G A Carneal, 329 South Madison avenue; Mrs Ben Rhew, 312 Murray street, and Mrs Noel. Her husband, T L Arnold, died in 1919.

The body was taken this afternoon from the S T Harris Funeral Home, 224 North Main, to the home of Mrs Noel to await the funeral. Funeral arrangements are to be completed tonight or Friday morning.

Esq. Clayton Dies Suddenly

Marion Thomas Clayton, 51, former magistrate and member of the county board of education, was found dead in his bed Saturday morning when his family called him for breakfast. Death was attributed to a heart attack.

M T Clayton was born October 3, 1878, in West Hanson, where he spent his life. He engaged in farming all of his mature years and made a pronounced success as an agriculturist. He was always interested in politics and was active for the democratic party in all campaigns.

On December 9, 1900, he married Miss Birdie Veazey, of West Hanson, and to them ten children were born, five boys and five girls. All survive except one daughter, who died in infancy. The survivors are: Thurman and Jasper Clayton, of Madisonville; Fred and Rufus Clayton, of Hanson; the daughters, Misses Bonnie, Cleone, Geneva, Gladys and Agnes, who made their home with their father.

Five brothers and five sisters survive. They are: Mrs John Clayton, Paris, Tenn.; Mrs I A Clayton, North Carolina; Mrs Brack Gammons, Madisonville; Mrs Homer Adams and Miss Nora Clayton, West Hanson; J T, G W, G L and J L Clayton of West Hanson, and Scott Clayton, of Richland.

In his early life Esq. Clayton taught school. He was elected to the fiscal court in 1916 and served four years, and four years ago he was a candidate for the democratic nomination for county judge.

Lem Potter Clayton, 64, Providence, dropped dead Monday morning in the business section of Pprovidence at 9 o'clock.

Girl Killed By Train At Hanson
Child En Route Home From School When Accident Occurred

Being struck by a main line L & N passenger train which was running at a high rate of speed, so it is said, and meeting death under the wheels was the fate that befell the seven-year-old daughter of Mr and Mrs Bernice Campbell of Hanson, while she was en route home from school Thursday at noon.

The child was crossing the railroad track with several companions when she was killed.

The train was being detoured via the Henderson division because of the damage done to a bridge on the main line of the railroad.

Mrs Henry Smith, (Nee Miss Hallie Cosby) Passed Away At Christianburg, Va.

Slaughters, June 19.-- The citizens of our little city were greatly shocked and greived, when a telegram was received Sunday, June 15, announcing the death of Mrs Henry Smith of Christianburg, Va.

Mrs Smith had been ill for ten weeks, but had begun to show improvement following an operation for gall stones and appendicitis. She suddenly grew worse Saturday afternoon and sank rapidly.

She was about 26 or 27 years of age, and was the youngest daughter of Mrs Mary Ida Cosby, and the late Dr. W C Cosby who also died on June 15th nine years ago. Mrs Smith was married less than two years ago to Mr Henry A Smith of Christianburg, Va. She is survived by her mother Mrs W C Cosby; her husband Henry A Smith of Christianburg, Va., and three sisters: Mrs A M Charlton, of Christianburg, Va., Mrs J H Whitson and Mrs E L Kerney of this place.

Funeral services were conducted at the Cosby residence Wednesday afternoon, by Rev. M J Dick, with interment in the Slaughters cemetery. The pallbearers were: Cornelious Coffman, Iley Nance, Hayden Prather, William Smith, Lucien Wells and Ellsworth Crowley.

The flower girls were: Miss Annie Smith Whitson, Willie Mae Ogden, Annie Bell Weatherspoon, Ione Reynolds, Blanche Wells Linnie Couch, Ray Prather and cora Jones.

The many floral offerings were beautiful.

Brief funeral services for James Chris Coffman, 80, retired Slaughters tobacconist who died Thursday in Nashville following a long period of ill health, will be conducted at 2:30 pm Monday at the Slaughters cemetery, burial site.

Rev. J L Piercy, pastor of Slaughters Methodist church, will officiate at the last rites. Pallbearers will be James W Hammond, Richard Anderson, D C Whitaker, Ernest Hopgood, J T Hammond and Burl Dunkerson. The body is at S T Harris Funeral Home, 224 North Main street, until the funeral.

Mr Coffman was married to Miss Isa B Hopgood, who died in 1901. Mrs Campbell, 85, Dies Here

Mrs Arah Etta Campbell, 85, died at 3:10 pm Sunday in her home, 23 North Seminary street, from a heart ailment. She had been bedfast for seven years.

Mrs Campbell, daughter of Paul and Margaret Gooch, was born September 20, 1862, in Granville county, NC. She came to Hopkins county with her parents in 1866 and had been a resident of Madisonville for the past thirty years.

She married W R Campbell on February 4, 1884, and to this union two sons and four daughters were born. For twenty-five years she had been a member of the Madisonville First Baptist church.

Rites 3 pm Tuesday

Surviving are the husband; son, B H Campbell, Nebo rfd 2; four daughters, Mrs Pete Webb, Mrs Mattie Hancock, both of Madisonville; Mrs Jeff Oldham, Nortonville; Mrs Cladye Fears, Louisville; thirteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3 pm Tuesday in the home. Rev. Harold D Tallant, pastor of Madisonville First Baptist church, will officiate, assisted by the Rev. C B Curtis. Burial will be in Grapevine cemetery.
