Hi!

I am doing a one-name study of ULPH (my own surname) and ALPE, and am registered with the Guild of One-Name Studies as the official collector of those names. In 2005 I published 'ULPH Family History', which includes historical data about the English ALPEs and their origins. I'm afraid I know nothing of any Italian ancestors, but I am keen to learn more about the ALPEs who migrated from England to America - and other countries. Please get in touch!!

Hi, I am the granddaughter of Marco Alpe, born 1913 in Lake Village. Nono passed away in 2001. Miss him everyday. Anyway, I am researching for my mother Annette. I plan on visiting Lake Village with her to see the gravesites. Is there a museum about Sunnyside down there? Anyway, I was wondering what Albina Alpe's maiden name was and if anyone knew Alessandro's parents names. I had Anthony Bourgognoni's periodicals, but i have misplaced them. Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Melissa Foner

In 1895, Alessandro Alpe and wife, Albina, came to Ellis Island from Italy, and traveled to Chicot County, Arkansas. In the 1910 censu, Alessandro is 60 years old and Albina is 54. It states that they have 7 of 10 children living.. Children listed as living with Alessandro are: Marco, Marcella, Gueniero???, . Also with them are Marco's wife, Antonia and their son, Bernando. Next door to Alessandro is his son, Silvio Alpe, age 27, and wife Guiseppa, age 26, along with children andrea, Stella and Alessandro. More children were born to Silvio and Guiseppa. If you have any info on the Alpe name or American relatives, please advise. I am working on the Alpe family for a friend. Patty Smith

Dear Davis (may I call you David?),

Thank you for your mail. I've been thinking of all the possibilities of the root of Alpe for bullfinch and have not come up with anything. I most certainly will be contacting Mr. Ulph.

Have a good day!

Andrew BAYLY

Andrew,
I have a contact who may be of help to you. Please contact him. His name is Colin Ulph.
colin@ulph.fsnet.co.uk
Alpe is a dialect name for finches, particularly the bullfinch in Norfolk and Suffolk. I found reference on this in the Oxford English Dialect Dictionary, published in about 1899 or 1900. Chaucer actually mentions" Alpes, finches and wodewales" but I cannot give you the exact source of the reference.

Dear Mr. Alpe,

Thank you for your mail. My paternal grandmother was called Rose Alpe and she was indeed born in East Anglia (I don't remember where exactly). She died in Felixtowe in the early 1970s.

P>I would be interested in finding the origin of the use of Alp for a bull finch. Is it from anglo-saxon? It does not appear to have a Latin root. Could you tell me in which of Chaucer's tales the word appears in?
(I'm a French - English translator).

Finally, would you feel that Alpe is a common East Anglian name?

Thanking you again for your message.

yours sincerely

Andrew BAYLY

I am just beginning to look for Alpe ancestors. The name is an East Anglian one and goes back for several centuries. It is an old country name for the bullfinch. Chaucer mentions "alps and nightingales".
There is apparantly someone who has researched the family history and I am trying to make contact with them at the moment.

My paternal grandmother was called alpe. She married my grandfather who of course was called Bayly. They were married in The east end of London in the nineteen twenties but I think she was born in Lowestoft East Anglia, England. I know it's an Italian name. I saw her once. She was very dark and ate Camembert cheese. If you find any information about the Alpes, I would be very interested.

Best regards

Andrew Charles BAYLY

Paris, France
