I am researching a family in Hamilton Co.,Ohio.

Ray Duwel married Glattrus Farley in 1923 in Welch, McDowell
County,West Virginia. They had one son, as far as I know, Thomas born in 1925. He was married and divorced and had children.

Would like to contact his children and grandchildren.

Glattrus Farley was my husband aunt. Her parents were William Thomas Farley and Lucy Alice Clay.

She had one sister that died as a Child, Edowa

Another sister, Volga married Buford J.Clifton and these were my husband, Lassister Neale Clifton, parents.

Any help with this family would be greatly appreciated.

Kathy Clifton
chatykat@infionline.net

My father was born and raised near Hamburg. Growing up I heard from him that the name Duwel at one time meant Devil. I was always fascinated by that. Too bad that mystery is now gone!

I'm currently living in Holland (Dutch is similar to German) - where the name for Devil is Duivel. Quite close!.

Is Duefel = Teufel = Devil?

I have heard that story, it has some truth and perhaps some fiction. The German D and T are very similar in pronounciation, even more similar than in English. In particular, at the end of a word a "d" often has a "t" sound.

If one looks in an English-German dictionary under Devil one finds Teufel.

Going back through the church records where my family came from (Hille, Germany), one can go back to about 1730 and even further back using land records. I find the family name is spelled many ways including: Düfel, Düwel, Düvel, Duefel, Duewel, Duevel (and all combinations can have 2 l's).

I have found no spellings of the name starting with a T, nor do I find the ue switched to an eu. The eu in German is pronounced like the oy in boy; this is somewhat different from how a ü or ue is pronounced.

So based on the Hille records, I would say that I see no evidence that Duefel (or its many variants) really means Devil since that takes a switch to a T and a refersal of the ue. But perhaps in some villages there is a link. Certainly the pronounciation of Duefel (or Duewel) is quite similar to Teufel - devil.

I have always heard the originally the name came from the german "Teufel" meaning devil. At least that is what my grandfather had told us.

Duwel, Duvel, Dufel, Duevel, Duewel, Duwell

These various spellings are all used interchangeably in a few German villages including Hille (near Minden) and in Erkeln. Early records seemed to use Duwel most frequently, and more modern records used Dufel more often, with Duvel used throughout.

In Germany the u would have an umlaut or a ue would be used. Sometimes the name would be spelled with two l's.

In America there are relatively small groups of Dufel, Duvel, Duwel, Duevel, and Duwel, and it is possible we are all part of the same family.

I have researched all of the Dufel families in America and I have contacted many Dufel's in Germany, and would like to learn if any of the families with other spellings have a common ancestry.
