I too am related to Hogeny Motes through Annie. She is my 2x Great Grandmother. If records are correct and he was born in NY as was his father Zebulon Mott, then they were not Cherokee. Based on the area that these records say they were born in, they would most likely belong to the Shinnecock Nation in New York. I have requested any information that the Shinnecock may have on Mott/Motes. I like you, have always been told by my Mom that Annie was "half Cherokee". I can see the confusion as most all indigenous peoples living in the NC,SC, Georgia area are lumped into the "Cherokee" category. Not to mention the fact that my Mom and her whole family are from Tuckaseegee Valley which is dead center of Cherokee country. If and when Hogeny and Zebulon are from a New York tribe, I wonder how they would up in the South. As soon as I find out more I will post.
