I am looking to get in touch with any Mahers whose families may have originated in County Longford, Ireland. My branch is specifically from the Longford town area (Coolnahinch and White Rock) in the Templemichale parish. I have hit a dead end and would appreciate any help. Thanks!

Hi, my Maher ancestors came from Newtownforbes, Clonguish, Longford. William Maher and his wife, Mary (probably nee Whalen), had children there in the 1820s and '30s. Mary died in Jersey City, N.J., in 1868; William may have emigrated as well. Known children are James, John, Peter, William, Catherine, Mrs. Thomas Thompson and Mrs. William Boyle. The family apparently settled in Jamaica, L.I., before dispersing.
