Father's birth certificate indicates Zbydniow. Anyone have any information about this area. Will be in Krakow in December and would like to do some research- any suggestions. ( do not read or speak Polish...)

Hi Renee,

in Poland are 2 villages with name Zbydniow,
close to Krakow;

and;
http://www.pilot.pl/index.php3?z_city_id=8812&lang=pl

Father's surname should help in search.

Cordially,
Wladyslaw

My grandfathers Laborers book lists his birthplace as Zbydniow. He was born in 1896 and at that time, it was Galacia, Austria. Later, lines changed and it became Poland. The Powait was Tarnobrzeg-now Podkarpackie. If this is the same area your grandfather is also from, did you find LDS records for the parish of this town? I would be interested in knowing. Thanks!

His name was Ladislous Swieton (I think this is the German spelling for Walter but he was Polish and the Polish spelling is Wladyslaus)
His parents are listed as Isidorus Swieton ill. son of Mariannae Swieton;
mother, Helena daughter of Joannis Wolanski and Sophiae Badscha

Thanks for considering me with your help.

Vicky

Are you writing off the names from a Roman Catholic church document? The first names seems to be in Latin.

yes, this is off a baptismal record-Roman Catholic. Somewhere I read that during a certain period the Catholic church used German spellings of names and at other periods of Poland's history, the polish spellings of names were used. Thus, Laudislous and Wladyslaus were both forms of the same name-Walter.

The language of Roman Catholic church was and is Latin and thus Latin version of a first names on the church baptismal.
