A relative has records that show W. Southall, MD, born in 1771 and died in 1821 is buried in Buckingham County, Va. I'd appreciate any information about this W. Southall.

He is not in my direct line so I don't have much information, but I did find some items in my Southall database that may be of help to you:
1. 1790 VA Tax Lists (rootsweb.com) have 3 Wm Southalls -- 1 in Amelia Co. and 2 in Charles City Co.
2. Genealogy of VA Families, Vol. III, pp. 331-32 (W&M Swem Library) has the Bible of Ann Southall Shelton, daughter of Col. Turner Southall. It lists (p.331) Wm Southall, son of Dasey Southall and Edith, b. Mar. 16, 1732-3 and (p.332) Wm Southall, son of Turner Southall and Martha, b. Apr. 27, 1765, d. Mar. 2, 1796 31 years old (apparently unmarried).
3. Marriage Bonds of Charles City Co. VA (found in W&M Quarterly Vol. 8 No. 3 Jan. 1900 on rootsweb.com) lists (p.195 Wm Southall and Sarah Dudley, Mar. 3, 1780. (Also Sallie Southall Cotten Papers, UNC Southern Historical Collection, Acc. #2613 references them and has records of some of his deeds and his Will.)
4. Probably not your Wm Southall but Henry Holman Southall (1769-1855, married 1790) had a son named Wm Daniel Southall. I don't have a DOB but it would have to be after 1790.

Finally, there were quite a number of Southall doctors, notably (1) Dr. Philip Turner Southall (b. Apr. 12, 1791 Goochland Co. VA) of Prince Edward Co. VA, (2) Dr. Philip Francis Southall (b. Apr. 6, 1822 Jamestown, VA, son of PTS above by 1st wife, Frances Wilson Lockett), (3) Dr. Joseph Wills Southall (b. Mar. 4, 1833, son of PTS above by 2nd wife, Elizabeth Webster), and (4) Dr. Philip Francis Southall (b. 1851 Amelia Co VA, son of #2 PFS above) of Amelia Co.

Hope this information provides you some clues. Feel free to email me directly if you need to follow up.

My guess is that this is William Wood Southall (b. 1789, d. 15 Nov 1821 in Warminster, buried in Wm. M. Cabell's Cemetery, Buckingham Co., VA). He was a physician in Nelson Co., VA and the son of Stephen Southall and Martha Wood of Goochland Co., VA

Susan, thanks for your replies. I'm glad to have names of the Southall family members.
There is still my g g grandfather missing. He is William Albert Southall, probably born 1812 and married Rebecca Thomas, born 1814. Their children were Lucy, Luther Turner, Philip D., Felix D. ( my g grandfather ) and William M. They lived in Buckingham Co., VA. I remember traveling Rt. 15 north and being told that an attractive brick home near the highway was the Southall home. I thought perhaps the W. Southall, MD, was the father of William Albert. On Felix's death certificate, his father was listed as Albert Southall.
Felix married Martha Ann Walden who was a widow of ? Howell. Their children were Walter T., Albert P., Luther M., Henry A., Wesley Alexander ( my grandfather), Felix Beauregard, Napoleon, Matt Lee and Robert Edward. I'm sure that you already have this info.
I anxiously read your posts about the family.
If you ever find any information about this evasive William Albert and Rebecca Thomas, please let me know.
Thanks. Betty

Betty,

I first ran into William Albert Southall years ago (someone mailed me info on him long before I started on internet) & have tried figuring out who he is ever since. He is an enigma to me, especially since he named 2 of his children Turner & Philip -- those are names repeated through the descendants of Dasey & John Southall.

So far, there's only been one proven son of John Southall (deputy sheriff of Charles City Co., VA who died 1744/1745) & that is John; so William could be one of his descendants.

Then we have William Southall of Raleigh Parish who moved to Amelia Co., VA around 1755 after he was left destitute due to a fire -- he had a large family, but I've only found info on 2 of his daughters.

I haven't given up hope, though, as there are many records I still haven't been able to check in the Buckingham, Cumberland, Powhatan, etc. vicinity -- somewhere there is bound to be a clue, we just haven't found it yet. If I ever run across anything, I'll be sure to let you know & since this has driven me nuts for years, please do the same for me.

Angelfire closed my Southalls in America website for whatever reason, not long after my baby was born so I didn't really have the time to do anything about it, but I just got more space on the freepages here at rootsweb & will sart reposting the Southall info I've gathered there -- my goal is to trace the families of the Virginia Southall's. May take a little while since I had to box up my files (4 kids leaves little room for a bunch of files), but I'll get it done one way or another.

I haven't been able to get to the archives in years thanks to my 2 youngest (afraid of sitters), but my hubby gets days off during the summer & I'm hoping to get a little research more done soon -- cross your fingers for me :) One day, they'll all (at least most of them) fall into place once enough of the records are checked.

Susan :)

Betty,

This morning I was going thru my Southall database again, looking for a possible connection for your William Albert (you know we can sometimes look at something a dozen times & not have anything jump out at you until the 13th time -- brains bah humbug). Anyway, I found what could be a possible lead for your William Albert.

There was a Collier (or Collin) Southall who died around 1836 & he lived in Cumberland, Co. VA. According to records pertaining to the estate of John Dudley, he had "2 small children" -- Richard W. and William A. Now that was written in a letter by a lawyer & the facts about them being "small" could be incorrrect. This Richard W. and William A. Southall were listed as heirs of Capt. John Dudley.

According to the chart prepared by Dr. James Southall on file at the Virginia State Library Archives, Collier was the son of William Southall who married Sarah T. Dudley. Sarah was the sister of Capt. John Dudley & the Southall lines cross over several times by that connection -- very confusing -- but this line is the group that I've found which intermarries the descendants of John Southall (d. 1744/45) and the descendants of Dasey.

To make your line even more "fun" for me -- my Southall ancestors are on my father's side of the family. However, Robert Edward Southall (son of Felix Delaware Southall & Martha Ann Walden) married Elsie Mae East (daughter of Elisha William East & Mary Sue Mason) & the East's are my mother's side of the family. Elisha William East is my great great uncle on mom's side.

Still looking . . .

Susan :)
