For the benefit of those who are having trouble finding the info on the Hooker Mailing List at roots web I am re posting some info from there that I found on micro film and/or indexes.

-------------------------
The Rejected Applications of the Guion Miller Roll of the Eastern Cherokee:

To paraphrase somewhat from an Extract of the Roll :

The Cherokee Nation filed 3 lawsuits against the U.S. Govt. for funds due
them under their treaties of 1835, 1836 and 1845.

Over one million dollars was awarded to the Eastern Cherokee. The Guion
Miller Roll was created to distribute the funds among each Eastern Cherokee
person alive on May 28, 1906.

The criteria were to prove membership in the E.C. Nation at the time of the
treaties or to prove descendancy from a member.

Guion Miller was the special agent who identified the eligible recipients of
the warrant of $138.18.

The Guion Miller Roll is on 348 rolls of microfilm. Most rolls contain 150
applications. Out of 45,000 applications representing 90,000 individuals
only 30,840 were found to be eligible. Some of the African Americans were
rejected with a notation that the person was a former slave or descendant of
a slave; Other applicants were rejected as "Old Settlers" (Cherokee who went
west before 1835); some were identified as members of another tribe; and
others failed to prove relationship to an ancestor on an earlier Cherokee
roll; and some were identified as "white".

Re above--#2 Robert P. said his grandfather SAM died before 1851--somehow I left out "Sam".
We do know that all grand children reported that Sam lived in Stokes County, NC and might have been born thereabout but all went back and forth to neighboring Patrick, VA.
Sam was married to Mary Gibson whom we have confirmed was living and elderly with their son Jesse and his wife Betsy Arrington Hooker on the 1850 Census for Patrick County, VA.

One of this same Jesse's son "John W." mentioned on the Applicant Rolls later moved to Rockingham CO, NC.
Another John W. stayed in Patrick married a Margaret Derency/Akers and raised a large prosperous family. HE WAS NOT a son of Jesse and we have not yet confirmed his father.

Due to some emails a brief tree:

Jesse and Betsy Arrington Hooker had many children and several sons and grandchildren who applied for the Cherokee Funds. All were rejected--probably lack of proof, only family hearsay. This line went back and forth between Stokes CO, NC and Patrick CO, VA

Jesse was the son of Sam and Martha Gibson Hooker.
Sam was said to be the son of a "full blood Indian" named Robin. 2 of Jesse's sons said Robin's wife was a "Roosha"

Gabiel (Gabe) was contemporary with Jesse and based on descendants' memories would have probably been a first cousin.
Gabriel's son Samuel married Litha Beasley and then Lucinda Slate. Samuel and Lucinda's son Samuel T. (Thomas) had several children who applied for funds and are listed. So did Ephraim a son of Samuel and Lucinda, and a daughter of Samuel and his first wide Litha also applied.

From Samuel to Gabriel then would be Gabriel's father William who was said to have Indian blood.

Both Jesse's lines and Gabriel's lines had always "passed as white"

In very early Patrick there was a Robert, a William and a Samuel. We know that land was deeded from a Samuel to a son William.

The early relationship of the 3 names has not yet been confirmed. Nor the relationship with William and Jerusha Lawson Hooker of Stokes CO, NC nor with the Randolph County Hookers. This search is ongoing.

More male Hookers are needed for DNA testing to at least see haplogroups for sorting the various Hooker lines.

Surnames: Hookers, Grindle, Haynes
I am looking for a Thomas Hooker whos daughter Elizabeth married Lee Andrew Grindle. Thomas Hooker was living in 1920 in McDowell co. WV with a new wife I assume named Linsie with a Joe Haynes and Ella Gindle, Her marriage listed her mothers as Lizzie but not the father and I found a death record for an Ella Grindle Scott who is the right age to be this Ella, it lists the above parents.
Ella died in 1968 in Rockingham co. NC Thomas was born abotu 1847 in Va and in 1930 he was living in Surry co. NC with wife.
Does any of this tie into your Hookers.

All I know is what the descendants told the Guion Miller Rolls
For example Lucinda Hooker:
5. "LUCINDA HOOKER born Dec. 18, 1892 living in Patrick CO, VA in 1907.
Father was THOMAS HOOKER and MARTHA CARTER
Grandparents were SAM and LUCINDA HOOKER.
Lucinda said: " I claim through my father THOMAS HOOKER and my Grandfather SAM HOOKER and through my great Grandfather WILLIAM HOOKER. All of whom were living in 1851"
Remarks were that great grandfather WILLIAM HOOKER was said to be half Cherokee Indian.

The different children of Thomas list as brothers and sisters: Ellen Slate, Elizabeth Grindle, Binda/Bindie Scott, Alpha Goin, Judah/Juda, a Joda, LUCINDA, Daisy, Thomas, James.

One lists "Father's side Grandparents" IN A COLUMN as THOMAS HOOKER then SAM HOOKER then Gabe HOOKER then WM. HOOKER.
All born Patrick County."

So I would assume that your Hooker names are the same and so related.
Several of us have been researching these lines and have encountered some road blocks

Briefly your line would be William to Gabriel and Nacy Pack Hooker to Samuel and Lucinda Slate to Samuel Thomas and Martha Carter to ...
Thomas is sometimes listed as Samuel T.
Thomas and Martha Carter Hooker's children were as listed variously on the Guion Miller Rolls and as spelled;
Ellen Slate
Sis or Elizabeth Grindle
Bindy Ann Scott
Alphia Going/Alpha Goin
Judith or Judah or Judie or JUDA
Jodie
Daisy
Thomas
Jim or James
James, Julia, Lucinda, Daisy, John T., Josie, and William

If you will go to the Hooker Mailing List at rootsweb you will find alot of info. Just enter a name and see what comes up.

Thanks I will try that. I did find Elizabeth and Leander Grindle listed in Patrick co. Va in 1900. but since Ella was not born until 1903 she is not of course listed there, and then I lost them in 1910. But her death record says his name was Lee Andrew close enough to Leander to be one and the same. Especially since Ella is living with Thomas in 1920. I appreciate your info.

Surnames: Hooker, Joyce, Shelton, Arrington
Thank you for posting this information. I too am researching this surname and some of the people on this post. My mother is a Shelton but her father was the son of Rader Eve Joyce. Rader was my ggrandmother. Rader's father was Sam Joyce and Emma Hooker. I have traced the line on Hooker ancestory and came with Samuel H Hooker, Jesse Hooker and even Mary Gibson. I would love to know what role you found these people on. I have had no luck with finding any one of these people listed as native american. I have been told my entire life that I was part native american and this gave me a little hope. I am also wondering what your relation to the Hooker's are? (If you don't mind answering that)
Thanks
Ginger

It is a special treat to actually meet one of these descendants! I would love to know how you came up with the Gibson link! Several of us have looked for all these connections for years.
Please go to:
http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/surname/h/hooker.ht...

There is a wealth of info there on the Mailing List.

I have been active there (the Hooker Mailing List) with several descendants of the Stokes Co., NC/Patrick County, VA Hooker lines. The records posted here were "rejected" applicants for Cherokee funds. None had proof other than hearsay passed down. I stumbled across the Guion Miller Rolls at the NC Archives and this led me to the original micro films which are detailed.

Currently these lines and others are on the Hooker DNA project at http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/hooker/
4 distinct and very different lineages (haplogroups) have been determined. The Hooker lines you are related to and the so called Randolph County, NC Hookers all have been determined to be Q1a3 which is indicative of Native American ancestry.

My own Hooker ancestry is my mother's father's line and is from the so-called William I lines.
We are determined to be R1b1b2 haplogroup which is indicative of Anglo-Saxon
