Seeking information on Mary Florence Bannerman, mother of Canadian PM John G. Diefenbaker. I am trying to establish her relationship with Ellen Bannerman b. abt. 1835 in Canada and married James Alexander Gallinger; daughter of Hugh Bannerman and Isabella Sutherland.

The maiden name of my maternal grandmother, Marjorie Rivet, was Bannerman. A number of years ago she did a family tree (having difficulty locating it). I do remember seeing John Deifenbaker as well as a some MacDonalds on there. As well, she told me that some of her ancestors were Sutherlands and McKays.
She had three sisters, the only name I remember right now is Joyce, and at least one brother, named Rundle.
I don't remember her father's name or her mother's, I do know her mother was from Norway.
They lived in Alberta, Canada.
If anyone has some information that might help me, I would appreciate it.

Thank you,
Alicia

Im am a great-great-grandson of George Bannerman (1795-1875) born at Alves,Morayshire,Scotland, who was a son of William Bannerman and Elspeth Matheson.I have been told that John Diefenbaker's mother Mary Florence Bannerman was a daughter of John and Flora Bannerman, and that his great-grandmother Christina Bannerman may be a sister of Alexander Bannerman (1790-1870) who married Elizabeth or Isabella Bruce. They had 9 children, including a son Hugh. It appears that Alexander may be a brother or cousin of my great-great-great-grandfather William Bannerman, which would make John Diefenbaker my mother's 4th or 5th cousin. He met Bannerman relatives of mine in Otago, New Zealand in about 1958, but was unable to establish a definite connection.Alexander appears to be a son of either Alexander Bannerman and Isabella Bruce, or John Bannerman and Janet Sutherland. I have no information on Ellen Bannerman or Isabella Sutherland. Tradition has it that the family is descended from Sir Alexander Bannerman, 1st Baronet of Elsick (1534-1711) but I have not yet been able to establish this.

My mother Mabel Bannerman was a first cousin of John Diefenbaker. She was the daughter of George Bannerman and Mary White. George was the brother of John Diefenbaker's mother, Mary Florence Bannerman. Mabel had a sister Florence (Flossie) who married James Mcleod. Mabel had many sisters, five or six of whom died in infancy.
John Diefenbaker made periodic visits to Windsor, where he would visit Flossie Mcleod's house; he would Flossie and Mabel Bannerman Cameron there. But my grandfather George Bannerman -- Diefenbaker's uncle -- would greet him but would enter into little conversation because he was such staunch Liberal and had a huge picture of Mackenzie King hanging in his bedroom. (He lived in Flossie's house, having moved there from the Port Elgin area of Ontario.)

Thank you for your interesting reply to my message. Do you have any information on your Bannerman ancestry further back than your grandfather George, or whether your branch of the family is connected to the baronetcy of Elsick?
My family too has divided political connections, in that a cousin of my father's was an aunt by marriage of Sir Wallace Rowling, Labour Party Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1974 to 1975, and as well, like my father, was a 3rd cousin-in-law of Sir Keith Holyoake, opposition National Party Prime Minister from 1960 to 1972. You and I may also have a distant connection with Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman, Prime Minister of England from 1905 to 1908.
