My grandfather was Frank Wald from Cinn., O. He ran away to sea at the age of 13. Know only that his parents were probably Abe and Julia Wald. Possibly a brother Francis, but spoke of a large family. Probably born in the mid to later 1800's. Married my grandmother in 1923 and had a suprise (my mother) in 1924. Of German descent. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Olympia von Wald was my grandmother on my fathers side...She came from a large family of 6 brothers, one of which came to this country in the late 1800's early 1900..His name was Stephen Wald I know he was in California and then Cripple creek Colorado..my grandmom's working papers are from Germany..but she was born in Rumania or the part of the Ukraine that was under the Austro Hungarian rule at the time..She always said she had a von before her name..which I think was German,, Stephen was her oldest brother and the only one she was able to stay in contact with...she finally went to co to see him in 1963 or 4..It was 60 years they hadnt seen each other (He left for the new country.) He had said 2 other brothers had come after him, but I don't know their names. I'm trying to find out more about Stephen to do my Family tree...Is there anything else you know about your family?

Dear Linda,
I know very little about my Grandfather Wald. As I said he ran away to sea when he was 13. I know that he spent most of his life in the merchant marines. The reason I know that he probably had a brother Francis was that when he went to work and needed a copy of his ssn he was sent a copy for his brother not him. At first he was delighted because he stated he was younger then he was, but when it came time to collect he grumbled because it wasn't as old as he was. To my knowledge he never did anything about this. He died in Long Beach, Calif. in 1957. I was only 9 at the time and I am not sure how old he was, only that he was quite a bit older then my mother. What few relatives I had on that side are long gone and to be honest I have not yet started an "official" search for him and family yet. Have been doing genealogy research on some other branches. I guess that one is never really done on this sort of thing. I have to say that I have met some truely wonderful and helpful people in my searches. I have no idea if our families are related. I don't believe as I think about it that my grandpa had an accent that was noticeable. I think that he was born here, but maybe his primary family spoke another language or with an accent. I truely do not know. It would be wonderful if I had finally gotton some more information on him.
Please keep me in mind if anything relavant turns up and I will do the same for you. Please feel free to e-mail me .

Best regards,

Mary

Dear Mary Hubbard,
Our Wald's may be connected. My maternal great-grandfather was Fredrick Wald, born July 29,1857. His daughter, Henrietta, told me that her father entered the US through New York, at 17 and stayed with an uncle in Cincinnati, OH, before working his way to Portland, OR with the Telegraph Co.

I only just started research on my Wald line, so have little information at this time.

sincerely,

Dear Mary,
The only other information I have is... Fredrick Wald's,(1857) father is Fredrick Wald, born in the 1830's and is said to be a Saxon. I have a photo of a Henrietta Wald, said to be a sister to Fredrick(1857)that was taken by a photographer in Eisenach, Germany.

Will keep in touch.

Dear Rose,
Been a while but I want to tell you of recent developments of my Wald line. Just last week found my ggrandparents, Julia (nee Berliner) Wald and Abe Wald. They are in a Jewish cemetery called Judah Touro on Sunset in the west part of the city. There are quite a few Walds there, some adults that may be brothers and wives, and babies and children. Do not at this point know who is who, but am going there in June and hope to get some more information. There are also a lot of Berliners there too. I am told that this is just one of 9 Jewish cemeteries in the area. Weil Funeral Directors do all the Jewish burials. I called them and found out that they have lots of records, but that they are in the process of moving to a new location and things are a mess right now. So I will be contacting them again in the future to see if I can learn anything more. Keep in touch. Someday I hope to find some cousins!!!

My maternal great grandmother was Clara Wald Allenberg, who likely was related to your grandfather. Clara was born in Cincinnatti in 1881 and died in New Orleans in 1961.

Continuing my prior message.

My great grandmother, Clara Wald Allenberg, was born in Cincinnatti in 1881. I recall that she has ten sisters and brothers. She married Sigmund Allenberg in 1902. Sigmund was from a large family also from Cincinnatti, who immigated from Hettenheidelheim Germany circa 1882 when my great grandfather was an infant. Sigmund was born 2/20/82 and died 1/27/36. They has two children, Helen Allenberg Rubenstein (3/18/04 - 12/31/82) (my matermal grandmother) and Lester Allenberg (12/15/05 - 1/30/87). Clara and Sigmund lived for a while in Indiana, and then in Memphis, relocating to New Orleans about 1914. Both are buied in Hebrew Rest Cemetary in New Orleans.

I have a great deal of info on the Allenberg family, but none on the Walds of Cincinnatti. My mother may know more.
