I'm a descendant through David's son Enoch Bruton and his wife Dorcas; then Enoch's son Elisha Bruton, who moved to Texas in 1834. I am interested in any info available re David--his parents, where born, his siblings, etc. Any info appreciated.

Frank,
Thanks for the info on your Bruton line. I am also descended from David Bruton through his son Enoch, and Enoch's son Elisha Bruton. Elisha Bruton left S.C. with his parents, and they came to Texas via Tennessee and Alabama, arriving here ca 1832. Elisha settled first in Red River County, in the area that is now Bagwell, and a creek which ran through his property was named Bruton Creek. He served in the Texas Revolution against Mexico in 1836, and was awarded a land grant in Titus County, TX, moving there about 1846. When Franklin Co. was created in 1875, his property was then a part of that county. He received a pension for his service in the Texas Revolution. Here is some info re his family.

ELISHA BRUTON was born 20 August 1806, Spartanburg Co. SC; died 2 August 1887, Grey Rock, Franklin County, TX, and is buried at Tranquil Cemetery, north of Winfield, Titus County, TX; married NANCY REED, dau of Joseph and Elizabeth (Humphries) Reed, in 1834, Red River County, TX. Nancy was born 6 Jnauary 1816, Franklin County, AL; died on 1 March 1892, Franklin Co. TX; also buried at Tranquil Cemetery.

Children of ELISHA BRUTON and NANCY REED were:

1. ARMSTEAD P. BRUTON
b. 1836, Red River Co., TX
m. (?)
d. (?)

2. MARY ANN BRUTON
b. 24 February 1839, Red River Co., TX
m. 1855, WILLIAM MICHAEL HOUGHTON
d. (?), in Texas

3. LAUSONE T. BRUTON
b. 2 December 1840, Red River Co., TX
m. 24 Sept 1865, JULIA T. STEWART, in
Lamar County, TX
d. (?)

4. NANCY JANE BRUTON
b. 6 Nov. 1842, Red River County, TX
m. 1 Dec. 1859, SILAS S. HUGHES, in
Titus Co., TX
d. 12 Dec. 1925, Decatur, Wise Co., TX

5. JAMES BRUTON
b. 16 Oct. 1844, Red River Co., TX
m. MATTIE (?)
d. 1927, Decatur, Wise Co., TX

6. JOHN BRUTON
b. 30 Nov 1846, probably in Titus Co, TX
m. (?)
d. (?)

7. WILLIAM BRUTON
b. 3 Feb 1848, Titus Co., TX
m. (?)
d. (?)

8. SARAH BECK BRUTON
b. 21 Aug 1849
m. (?)
d. (?)

9. JESSE BRUTON
b. 7 Mar 1852, Titus Co., TX
m. Dona U.
d. 1892, Titus/Franklin Co., TX

There may be other children Joseph, Benjamin Franklin, and Elisha Thomas Bruton. I have not proven they were his yet.

Thanks again; hope this is helpful info.

Terry,

Thanks for the Bruton info. It seems that the Brutons that went west spell their name with a "u" and most of the ones who remained in SC seem to prefer "ew". What has been your observation?

You mention that Elisha left SC with his parents, Enoch and Dorcas, do you know where they are buried? Did they make it to Texas, or did they die in AL or TN?

Do you know of any brothers or sisters for Enoch? I have a lot of info before Enoch but nothing of Enoch and Dorcas' children.

Thanks for the info. If I discover something that might help, I'll send it to you.

Frank,

Yes, the Brutons who came to Texas did spell the surname with a "u", not with "ew".

Info I have received from several researchers have Enoch dying in Smith Co., TN in the 1820s; Dorcas probably died in Alabama, as I have not found anything about her in Texas data.

Siblings of Enoch Bruton (children of David Bruton) were:
1. GEORGE BRUTON
b. 5 June 1762, Anson Co. SC;
m. Sarah Addington
res. in Wayne Co., KY; soldier in Am.Rev.
d. 1838, Kentucky;
2. JONAS BRUTON
b. 31 May 1764, Anson Co. SC;
m. Agnes Harris
d. 6 Dec. 1857, Spartanburg Co. SC;
buried at Bethel Church Cem, Woodruff;
3. ENOCH BRUTON
4. DAVID BRUTON
b. 1770, SC
m. Mary "Polly" White
res. in Clark Montgomery Co.s, KY
d. 1847, Montgomery Co., KY;
5. ISAAC BRUTON
b. 1773, SC
m. Thursa Cole; she to TX after Isaac d.
d. 1817, in Tennessee(?)
6.MARY ELIZA BRUTON (name not proven)
b. (?)
m. John Williams;
d. 1806
7. PHILLIP BRUTON
b. 13 Sept. 1778, Spartanburg Co. SC
m. Agnes (?)
d. 17 June 1861, Spartanburg Co. SC
buried @ Bethel Church, Woodruff, SC

Let me know if you find anything of mutual interest. Thanks again,
Terry

Richard,
I guess everyone is still searching for old David's parents, and the name of his first wife. I've not learned anything more about either.
Is there any specific information you are seeking re your line? If so, I'd be glad to look through my data.
Thanks for the message.

Terry:

I guess Susannah is David's 2nd wife? She is
mentioned in his will recorded 2/20/1816.

In the book "Warrants for Land in South
Carolina Vol.3 1692-1711, page 169, it was
recorded that Daniel Bruton received 1000
acres of land. I have not been able to link
Daniel to David, but I think there is some
connection.

Anyway, I appreciate the reply. I'm just going through
my father's old notes and I don't know enough
yet to ask any questions. I need to input
all my data into a genealogical database so
I know exactly what info I have.
Could you recommend any genealogy software?

Maybe I'll have some questions later.

Thanks,
Richard Bruton

I have used the Family Tree Maker software, and have been very pleased with it.
Re David's wives, Susannah was his second wife.
Let me hear from you again. My e-mail address is tgtemple@neto.com.

Richard,
I am also working on Davis Bruton's lineage and am curious about the will you mentioned. Where is this will located? I found in Spartanburg Co land conveyance records where James Bruton sold some of his land and David is listed as being north of the boundary line. So I'm assuming that James and David are brothers. This was dated 5Jun 1785. The Wofford's are also listed doing transactions. Siblings of David were James, George, Samuel, and a sister who married John Gambrell. Let me hear from you.

Thanks,
