We have been searching for our Grandfather , William McGrenere's birth place. We believe that he was the eldest son of James McGrenere and Annie McMonilge from around Socker near Letterkenny in Donegal. We believe that we may have found his brother Hugh's birth certificate dated March 28 1868, registered in the district of Church Hill in the Union of Letterkenny. We believe that William was born around 1862 and he had brothers named Dominic, James,Hugh, Ambrose and perhaps John. We also know of three sisters Mary, Catherine ( Cassie) and Rose. It is also thought that Ambrose was the last sibling to leave Ireland for Canada. The old homested could have been near Treantagh (spelling may be incorrect. Any further information would be much appreciated.

If you heard of an area called Goland, in the Letterkenny local, you might want to look there. My great, great grandfather Daniel McGrenery was living there at the time of his marriage in 1874 to Fanny McCormick. His father was John McGrenra, a farmer beleived to be living in Co. Donegal.

If you haven't done so, you might try entering "gren*" in the Irish National Archive, 1901 Census search engine. The first hit I got was a Rose McGrenna, born in Rossgier about 1884.

There is a James McGrenra who lives in Carrick (?maybe Sockar) in the area of the mill that the McGrenra's ran in the 1800s.

I'm not sure I've got the direction quite right, the Michael Dolan father's who had sons and daughters between 1868-1874 Donegal, more detail than below is available.

Donegal:
William Dolan son of Michael Dolan/Bridget Gilmartin 1868
Owen son of same 1870, both registered Ballyshannon
Mary Dolan daugh. Michael Dolan/Mary McCann 1871, Ballyshannon
John Dolan same 1872, both Ballyshannon
Ann Dolan Michael Dolan/Margaret Conolly 1874, Ballyshannon

Tyrone:

No Dolan children for Michael Dolan. No Dolan's at all.

Here is what I know.
Michael Dolan was my greatgrandfather. He married Margaret McAleer in Newtownstewart Co.Tyrone in 1891. His marriage record from the church had no father's name or place of birth. His civil marriage record gave his age as 22, his father's name as Mick Dolan and the info that he was a widower.
Michael was born in 1854 and had children previous to marrying Margaret McAleer (he WAS a widower) Hos 1st wife was Maggie Nichol from Downpatrick and she died in 1891. She left 4 children:
Patrick, Robert born 1882 and Jane born 1881, and John James (at least). Jane married James Coyle and they eventually lived in Londonderry and looked after Michael and Maggie (McAleer)'s children: Lizzie, Maggie and Frank after Michael's 2nd wife died in Glasgow in 1901 and lived with their half-sister in Duke Street in 1911 census.
