Surnames: MULHERN (and various spellings)
Having read the obituary announcement submitted by Nancy Knizer on 19 May 2001, for Mary J. Mulhern, I believe Mary J. may be a great aunt. Her father would have been Dennis Mulhern (Mulherrin and various other spellings) who came from Ireland and was naturalized before 1870 according to the U.S. census for 1870. His wife was Mary (maiden name unknown), also from Ireland. No information on the township or parish in Ireland that they came from. They lived on Empire St. in 1880 and later at 170 Grant St. in Wilkes Barre, PA. Other children were Bridget, Catherine, Celia, Annie, Rose, Margaret and Joseph. Dennis died before 1889 as Mary is listed as Dennis' widow in the Wilkes Barre City Directory for that year. According to the 1910 census Mary, Mary J., Anna J, Rose and Joseph A. were living at 170 Grant St.
My great grandfather, Daniel Mulhern may have been a brother of Dennis, if not they are closely related. Daniel and his family also lived on Grant. St. He died in June 1908 at South Meade St. in Wilkes Barre. His wife Mary (nee Mc C/Glinchy) died in Dec. 1903 at home at 93 Hillside St. Her surname is spelled Mulherrin in her obituary, which is how the name is often spelled until it became Mulher(i)n later.
Daniel immigrated from Liverpool to N.Y. in July 1859 per his naturalization papers and lived in the Hazleton area until about 1880. No other info on Dennis except that he and many of his family members are buried in St. Mary's Roman Catholic Cemetery in Hanover Twp., Wilkes Barre, PA.
Many Mulherrins (Mulhern) lived in Mauch Chunk (Jim Thorpe) and Hazleton before moving to Wilkes Barre.
Would appreciate hearing from anyone who may have knowledge of these families, would be glad to share the info I have with anyone who is interested. Thank you. Mary P.

Surnames: Mulherrin, Sharpe, Lowery
Hi, Mary,
I am researching Mulherrins of Carbon and Luzerne County as part of my Lowery/Sharpe family. My husband's mother was a Lowery and I think that her aunt Mary Sharpe from Summit Hill, Carbon County, PA, was married to a man named Bernard (or Barney) Mulherrin (spelled Mulheron sometimes.) They are in Hazle Township in 1860 as newlyweds and in 1870 they are living in Ebervale, Luzerne County, with their children, Ellie, Patrick, Margaret, Michael, Mary and James.
The Wilkes-Barre City Directories of 1889-1892 has Mary and her children living at 72 North Sherman Street.
In 1900, the Census lists the family as living at 110 North Meade Street and, while Mary is not listed as a widow, there is no evidence of Bernard.
With the spelling of Mulherrin and the location of their home in Wilkes-Barre, I thought Bernard might be related to Dennis and Daniel. Does any of the information I've mentioned sound familiar to you?

From Wilkes Barre Evening Leader Tues. 25 Mar 1890:
Thomas Mulherin, aged 25 died yesterday at the home of his father, 452 Northampton street, of typhoid fever. Funeral at 9 a.m. with requiem high mass in St. Mary's Church and interment in Hanover cemetery. Deceased had been ill only about two weeks. He was a brakeman on the Central Railroad and was a member of the Order of Railway Brakemen.
Does anyone recognize this person and if so, who is the father of Thomas? Appreciate the help.

Hi, I guess you thought I disapeared.
I finally found the pictures of Retta.

You can see from the pictures what a large part of my life she was.
AS soon as I scan them I will sent them along.

What email would you like them to go to or would you like me to mail the copies.
Mine is sholst1@verizon.net

There is also a picture of the back of the house at 1106 Dartmouth St.
I don't who the family in the picture are, but I guess they are yours.
I'm so glad I could provide this for youl
Susan
