My Grandmother, Edna Katherine (Lemke) Riley gave me a Lutheran Prayer Book when I was a child. My Grandmother lived in Baker MN, Clay County and Married Home J. Riley. They then moved to Evansville, IN. The Lutheran Prayer Book is dated 1918 and has the name: Herman Lemke, Baker - Clay Co. Minn. My nearest relative or closest friend is listed as: Lorris Lemke, Baker, MN. I know that my Aunt Minnie Lemke died in Chicago around 1960. My Grandmother Edna Lemke passes away at 101 years, 1 month and 1 day in Evansville Indiana. I have had the Prayer Book for some 40 years.

I may have information on this family, is it your family? It is not mine, but I have collected info on it, thinking one day it may tie into my branch of the LEMKE's.

This is a large family (14 Children), headed by Louis LEMKE, b. 1858 in Germany came to America (1872) with his parents, Carl LEMKE Christina BLOMK to a farm near Chicago. He m. Sophia Possehl 1 June 1881 DuPage Co., IL.
In 1892 they moved from IL to Iowa, and in 1909 to Baker/Barnsville area, Clay Co., MN.

The children are:
Fred, Amanda, Minnie, Herman, Eddie, Martha, Anna, Edna, Louie, Alvin, Arthur, Melinda Lilly. As I am missing one child, I assume one died young.

I have more info on this family if you wish to contact me, I would be happy to share what I have. There also may be more in the archives of the Lemke List.

Yes, this is my family.

Thank you for your response. Edna was my Grandmother who passed away at 101 years. My Dad was Raymond Clifford Riley the son of Homer and Edna (Lemke) Riley. Dad was born in Baker MN. shortly before they moved to Evansville IN. I would like to know more about the family and pass along the Prayer Book to a Person in the Lemke Family. I also have photo's with many Lemke Family Members in it, one includes my Grandmother before she was married, sixteen Lemke Family members are in it and was taken sometime in the early 1900's. Another photo is showing my Grandmother (Edna) chopping wood and carying it. Thank you so much, Patrick Riley - My E-mail is: Internet address:

I'm new at genealogy but what I received from Sharon Buethner due to a previous post has left me with the following information along with some that I've been able to fill in.

LEMKE's who emigrated from Germany to IL. to farm in 1872. They first were near Chicago, Cook Co., IL. In 1892 Louis Lemke (father of Arthur and Eddie) moved to Iowa and in 1909 to MN. Louis had two brothers, John (Johann ?) Lemke of Martin Co., MN August Lemke of Nebraska.

Louis Lemke b. 5 Sept 1858 in Germany, son of Carl Lemke (d. Cook Co., IL) and Christina Blomk (d. Charleston Co., MN). Louis (My Great Grandfather) married Sophia Possehl and they had the following children: Fred (Friedrich) Lemke - Franklin Co., Iowa, Amanda Lemke - m. Fred Fahrmann, Elmwood Twp., MN., Minnie Lemke (Murdered in Chicago, 1960's by robbers who broke into her apt., I remember going to the furneral) -m. Louis Lenthe, Elkton Twp, MN. Herman Lemke, Eddie Lemke - Martha Lemke - m. George Meyers, Franklin Co., Iowa, Anna Lemke - m. Carl Carr, Elkton Twp., MN., Edna Katherine Lemke - m. Homer Jackson Riley, (My Grandmother and Grandfather) Evansville, Indiana. Louie Lemke - Alvin Lemke - Arthur Lemke, Milanda Lemke, Lilly Lemke.

April 14, 1995 Arthur A. Lemke, born 27 Jan 1900 in Franklin Co. Iowa. Moved to Barnesville, MN in 1917, and in 1924 he married Sadie E. Brendemuhl in Moorhead, MN.
Five sons, Leslie, Loren, Harlan, Orville Dennis. Two daughters, Violet LaDonna. And his sister (One of them) Edna Katherine (Lemke) Riley, b May 4 1894, (101 years) died June 5, 1994 Evansville, IN. Homer J. Riley b. 18??, died 1960's?. buried Evansville, IN. un-marked grave, I went to the grave site and the caretaker indicated the grave once had a wood cross. The only information on Homer was that he was born on March 17, 18??.

Died 1989 - Eddie Lemke, (101 years) born 5 Sept 1888 in Elmhurst, IL. Moved to Latimer, Iowa 1902 and to Baker, MN 1909. He married Sophia Henning 18 Oct 1917 in Miltona, MN. He served in the US Army during WW I. One daughter, Lucille Lemke Setterholm, two
brothers, Alvin and Arthur, one sister, Edna Katherine (Lemke) Riley.

I have a photograph of the Lemke Family which contains pictures of: Fred, Herman, Edwin, Louis, Alvin, Arthur, Amanda (Fehrman) Minnie (Lenthe), Edna (Riley), Anna (Carr), Martha (Meyers), Albert, Great Grandfather Louis, Melinda (Hoganson), Great Grandmother Sophia (Possehl) Lemke and Lilly (Brown).

I will scan this photo and post it on my web site under Personal Page/Photo Album. The URL is: and my e-mail is: you may download the photo for your own use. I hope this information is in the right order and the photo will be of some help. If you see any errors, let me know so I can correct them.

NOTE: LeRoy Meyer is located in PA. and has done a lot of Lemke research. I do not have his address or e-mail at this time but will post the information when I receive it (If it's OK with him). LeRoy has written a book on Lemke's, which may be of help to all Lemke family members. The book was a one-time writing and I do not know if it will be re-published or not. Yes, I do have a copy, which is in the state of IL. I am in Arkansas. I purchased the book by e-mail from LeRoy. I have been Ill and was going through so many major surgeries at the time worried that I may not make it, I gave the Lemke book and all other information to my daughter (who is now keeper of the records) Rebecca Renee (Riley) Winnicki, Ottawa, IL. I have not reviewed any of this information to date.

I was surfing through the Lemke pages on the net and came
across your site. I guess we're related, that is my father in the
picture of the Louis Lemke Family, Arthur was my father who
passed away in 95, he is #16. the picture was taken I would
say aound 1915 give or take a couple of years. I have run into
a few people who have asked, who my Grandfather was, and
we thought that we might somehow be related, but I haven't
come across any Riley's until now.
The picture is great, it is the only thing I have of the family.
I'll be waiting for your reply
