Surnames: McNitt, McNett
Hello! Calling all McNitt / McNett family members. Sadly , my family McNitt / McNett research has come to a halt. I am in need of any info, leads, etc., for the following names:

**Andrew McNitt; born 18 May 1793, Niagra Cty, NY; married Sylvia Whitcomb 1802 had four children (John W., Hiram W., Lyman Alexander, Alvina J). To date, I have been unable to verify Andrew's parents names.

**Hiram W. (son of the above Andrew) born 03 Oct 1823, Niagra, NY; married L.H. Granger Prairie Rhode, Michigan; They moved to Van Buren or Kalamazoo, Michigan and had four children (Julia,Lyman,Willis, Sylvia).

I have information from Andrew generation to date, but I can not locate any information as to Andrews parents..... I would love any leads! Thanks, =)

I am interested in your Lyman Alexander McNitt. My great grandfather was named Lyman Durand McNitt and he was born in NY. He moved to Wisconsin. Lyman Durand had a son named Lyman as well. Is there a possiblity that we have a connection?

Mary,

There very well could be a connection. The Lyman I have recorded is the son of Hiram W. and LurrayAnn (Gragner) McNitt.

Hiram was born in New York, but his son Lyman was born in Michigan in 1849.

What year was your Lyman born in New York?

If I can be of any more assistance, just let me know! Have a great day!

Val,
I am sure that these are different Lyman McNitt's because of civil War records. There were two Lymans. Lyman A. McNitt was from Michigan and served in a unit from there. My Lyman is Lyman Durand McNitt who lived in Wisconsin and served in H company of the 10th Wisconsin Infantry. It could very well be though that these men were cousins because the name is so unusual and the families both go back to NY. I believe that my McNItt family came from Allegany Co, likely from Angelica township.

Lyman A McNitt's widow according to Civil war pension records was Corinthia and she made her claim from California, May 20, 1908.

Hope this helps.

Mary

Hello

I just happened to read your posting regarding the McNitt Family. I have been doing some research on the McNitt/McNett family for my grand daughters. You mentioned that a Lyman, son son of Hiram lived either in Van Buren or Kalamazoo Counties in Michigan. I have found a Lyman McNett living in Van Buren County, MI on the 1860 census. I believe this is a brother to Sylvester McNett whom I have been researching. Sylvester was born around 1810 in Niagara County, NY. He is listed on the 1860 census as living in Van Buren County, MI. His son Orville McNett/McNitt was born in NY in 1832 and died in Oceana County, MI in 1892. He was in the Civil War and had children: Elizabeth, Wiliam, Lenora, Flora, Olive, Lillian, George Mary and Orville. Mary Losia Mc Nitt was born in 1867. She married Will Markel. Their daughter Elizabeth May married Lewis Shafer and they had several children. Their one daugher Mattie married a Robbins and this is my grand daughers grandmother. She is still alive and in a nursing home. I believe thre is a connection to your McNett family and in my research in Van Buren County I found Sylvester and a Lyman amoug others. Sorry this is so long but wanted to make a connection. Maybe we can help each other.

I have just found the postings about McNitt/McNett family and just sent out a post to Val McNett and then read your reply about Lyman McNett. I have been doing research for my grandchildren and their direct ancestor Sylvester McNett/McNitt was born in NY and settled in Van Buren, County, MI. He had a son Orville who was in the Civil War. When I was checking census records for Van Buren County, MI I also found a Lyman listed on the 1860 census His wife is listed as Corinta and they had children Henry, Martha E. and a Triphena Percival living with them. Orville married a Lenora Percival and they were also living in Van Buren County, MI in 1860. Orville was in the Civil War and settled in Oceana County, MI in 1873. He was orginally from NY. I have found that his father Sylvester was from Scotland and his wife was Susan. Looks like we may have a connection. I know your posting is dated 2001 but hopefully you will read this. Possibly we can help each other.

I am connected to the Mcnitt family as well. Orville was my 2nd great grand father. I have the Mcnitt's dating back to John MacNaught 1360. They changed their name over the generations. John was the Chief of the Galloway MacNauchts.
If your interested i could get you started on finding more of our family.

Sally,
I'm happy to hear from you. I'd absolutely be interested in learning more... ~ Before I write too much, I need to access my genealogy folder so that I have correct names and dates to match with your information; but I'm extremely excited!

How long have you been reasearching the McNitt name? One question I can think of instantly is whether or not you have came across a "Hiram" McNitt?

Again, thank you so much for your reply. It was a delight to hear from you. I hope to stay in contact!
Sincerely,
Val

Hello again, happy to help. I have found that's the only way the family information get's discovered by helping one another. I have made contact with a few cousins in my search. Let's see i have been working on the bloodline for about 4 months now. Well on and off, at times you hit a wall until you find that person out there that knows answers to questions that arise. In that respect i have been lucky.
The answer to your question about Hirma McNitt, yes i have come across him. He is a son of my 4th great grandfather. Benjamin Franklin McNitt Born 01/09/1785 in New York. I don't have any dates on Hiram, but i do have his decendants.
Do you decend from Hiram?
I can send you some e-mails with information. Let me know where you are in your search. More then happy to help!
