Here are a few notes on the Pompey family, originally from Brunswick/Greensville Co. Virginia who moved to Greene Co., Ohio and then on to Whitley Co, Indiana and on to Michigan.

June 30, 1882 Amos Jeffries, son of Jordan Jeffries and Matilda Haithcock, married Josephine Burden, daughter of Hezekiah Burden and Mary E. Pompey. Whitley Co Indiana. Both are described as quadroon.

The following Pompeys are buried in the Jeffries Graveyard in Whitley. Also called Pleasant Hill Graveyard for the old church which has dissappeared.
Dawson 1802-1880
Sinia (Dawson's wife) 1822-1858
Alonzo Clinton Pompey (their son) 1858-1865
Claiborne Pompey (uncle of Dawson & Fielding) 1784-1854

Notice of Sheriff's sale 10/18/1877 in the Whitley Commercial involving Jonas and Mary M. Pompey

April 11, 1840 Claiborn Pompey, Wyatt Jeffries, Brinton Jones, and others summoned to appear in court to explain why they did not post the required $500 bond on "free negros and mulattos" The cases all appear to have been dismissed. (Wyatt Jeffries case is the only one for which any record remains)

Greensville Co Register of Free Negroes and Mulattos: March 10, 1825: Turner Pompey " afree man of color of a light yellow complection about 25 years old 5' 10 5/8 inches high in shoes & has a scar across his nose, a black mole on the right side of his neck & a scar on the back of his right hand, by occupation a planter"

Cass Co., Mich. Death certificate of Jonas Pompey: d. 5/27/1910, 62 years old, Black male, son of Gulden Pompey and Lorencia Jeffries (probably should be Fielding)

1907 Guion Miller Cherokee application of Zachariah Pompey
States his parents were Fielding Pompey and Lurana ?. Mothers father was Harbert Jeffries. Stated that he had Indian blood on both sides of family. Said his father claimed to be 1/2 Indian. Thought his mother was about 1/4 Indian "I am known as a mixed blood man. I am not known as a colored man" His son Richard Pompey also applied.

1910 Cass Co., Mich Federal Census: Zachariah and Andrew Pompey, and their households, counted as Indians.

I also have some Civil war era news clippings from Whitley relating to the Pompeys, particularly a fairly racist one entitled "Miscegenation in Whitley" relating to a couple a mixed marriages in Smith township, where most of the "people of color" resided. The Jeffries family pretty uniformly claimed to be Indian, and went to court to prove it onb numerous occasions in Whitley and Greene Co., Ohio. I'll have to dig out the news articles. I hope this is of interest to someone out there.

I'll check, but I believe Lavinia was a daughter of Wyatt Jeffries and his Jones wife. I don't have my files in front of me. Wyatt was a son of Sally Jeffries, a half-blood Indian woman, by (probably) Darius Robinson, a white neighbor of hers in Virginia. Wyatt kept the Jeffries name, but his brothers Augustus and Parker, took the Robinson name. Their descendants are Robersons today in Whitley. Wyatt is buried in the old Jeffries graveyard in Whitley. More later
