Do you know the parents of Ida and Earl Chitwood/Chetwood born in Minco, Oklahoma around 1820. Their mother was Sarah Elizabeth Eubanks. She married a Chitwood first and later I believe a Mitchell and thirdly a Winn. She moved to Hood River, Oregon during the depression. Do you know anything about this family or the Oklahoma Chitwoods/Chetwoods. Please share. Thanks, Toni Garza

Dear Carolyn, What a gem you are. You hit it right on the nose. Thank you so much for the info about my grandma and her brother Erle. The infant children of John D. and Lizzie were probably grandma's twin. She said Lizzie always had twins, but always lost one of them. Thanks again, Carolyn. If you want the rest of the family tree on down from Ida, who married Ira J. Dobbins, I can send that to you if you send me your address. I don't know Irle's history though, but maybe some of the family does. Sincerely, Toni Garza

Dear Carolyn, since you last helped with Ida and Erle Chitwood, I have been doing some research. The only one I can find who had a son John D. Chitwood, was a Daniel Chitwoode, and wife Anna. His father was James and wife Martha White, and his father Richard Sr., Chitwood and Winnie Randolph. Does this sound right to you? Do you know who the Oklahoma Chitwoods fit in the Chitwood tree?

Thanks Caroline for your confirmation. I was surprised to see the Chitwoods went so far back in America, as my grandmother told me her grandparents had come from Dublin, Ireland. Maybe I misunderstood her. Maybe she said the Chitwoods were from Dublin, Ireland. Thanks again. By the way, what was your source? Is there a website?

Cemetery records for John D. Joel B. Chitwood, etc. were found @ ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ok/grady/cemeteries/ever... .
Census records were found on microfilm at local genealogical library. These original sources are the most reliable ones. Other useful information about your ancestors can possibly be found by writing to the county recorder (probate land records, etc). Good luck to you.

Toni--another branch of the Chitwoods to make
it to Oklahoma:

Matthias>Richard>James>Pleasant>Hugh>Henderson>
Amanda Chitwood Stevens.

Amanda was my grandmother; she and my ggf
Henderson and family came to OT about 1892
from Reynolds County, MO. Henderson and his
father Hugh and the rest of the family had
moved to MO from Scott County, TN about 1850.

Henderson and family settled in NE Oklahoma
County.

Surnames: CHITWOOD, HOOVER, SHIPLEY
The Oklahoma Chitwoods are alive and well at this writing. My maternal grandparents were Iva Hoover and Earl Chitwood of Tuttle, OK in Grady County. My Earl is not to be confused with yours, Toni, though I suspect they were cousins. Minco and Tuttle are only 8 miles apart, by the way. My Earl's parents were Rachel Lou Shipley and John Chitwood. This John Chitwood was the first county commissioner of Pottawatamie County after statehood in 1907.

Iva and Earl moved to Osage County, OK around 1930 and raised their 8 children there.

I have many Chitwood cousins scattered around Oklahoma and elsewhere.
