My grandmother's maiden name was Graeter. Her father was Charles Graeter. He immigrated from Germany in the 1870's and settled in Paige, Texas, which is where she was born. Where did your Graeters settle when they immigrated?

Jacob Graeter died in Germany. His decendants (the one's that I'm familiar with) who go by different names through his daughter ended up in Northern Virginia. There may be a link between our families. . .I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Christine.

Dear Christine,

My grandmother's maiden name was Graeter. Her father, Charles Graeter, immigrated to Texas around 1870, from the area of Stuttgart, Germany. I have been trying to locate his parents and/or ancestors, but so far I have had no luck. You are the first one I have come across with the same name and the same locale.

Sherri

Is the Charles Graeter you speak of the Charles Graeter born July 15, 1846 and died 4 May 1923 in Paige, Bastrop County, Texas? I am not descended form this man or his immediate family but have been researching collateral lines of the Graeter family of Oberlenningen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

If this is you ancestor then be was born Carl or Karl Graeter in Oberlenningen. He applied to immigrate from Oberlenningen in January 1870. His parents were Johannes Graeter (1807-1891) and his wife, Catharina Graeter (1813-1886). His grandparents were Johann Michael Graeter (1779-1858) and Christina Margaretha Stöle (1782-1840) and Johann Christoph Graeter (1787-1873) and Maria Jacobina Huber (1788-1858), all of Oberlenningen. If you have are able to borrow microfilm from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City you might wish to order film number 1457522 which contains the first half of the Family Register of Oberlenningen and give details on these families.

Yes, this Charles Graeter was my great grandfather. I am so glad to hear from you because I have been able to find very little about him. Thank you so much for this information. We should keep in touch. My e-mail address is sherrigraf@hotmail.com I would be interested in any other information you have about his family in Germany. Thanks again.
