I have traced my roots back to Lydia Cuffe (1761-), daugher of freed slave Kofi Slocum and Ruth Moses, a Wampanoag woman from Martha's Vineyard, MA. Lydia Cuffe married a man named Samuel Johnson (1760-) also from MA. They married in 1808 or 09. I am wondering if Johnson was Wampanoag, mixed race, black, etc. Anyone have information on him?

The Johnsons were a big family out of Gay Head (Aquinnah)Mass which is on Marthas Vineyard. They were a family with a very strong bloodline thru the 19th century.A few Johnsons lived in New Bedford Mass as whalers during that time. There are a couple of photos of (off the top of my head) of a mid aged Simon or Samuel Johnson...i beleive Simon. He had a certain pure Wampanoag look without question. I have the photo which i got from thr Smithsonian but copys are around and pretty easy to get. My name is Stephen Wixon, further questions...send a facebook request.
