I am researching the "other" FOILES line through my direct, Henry Preston FOILES, b. 1826, Norfolk Co., VA d. 1879, Norfolk Co., VA married Georgianna THOMAS in 1849.
Henry was the son of Joseph P. FOILES, b. abt 1802 in Port Mahon, Menorca, Balearic Islands (which are located off the southern coast of France!!)
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

My name is Michael Pollock and I, too, am researching this family. I've not been able to find thus far any record that establishes either that Henry's middle name was Preston or that the maiden name of his wife was Thomas. I am interested in the documentation you may have for the same as it may provide leads for researching the ancestry of Henry's mother (I've seen her name erroneously given in message boards as Reed) and his wife Georgia.

I believe Joseph was related to (probably an uncle of) a Domingo Fiol whose family settled at Charlestown, Massachusetts about 1845 before moving about 1870 to Portsmouth, Virginia.

I am told by a professional genealogist in Spain that Foiles is found on in the Balearic Islands and is believed to be a variant of Fillol (not certain I have the correct spelling as I am not at my own computer where I have the information) which is found only in Catalonia and Valencia, the two mainland provinces which are closest to the Balearic Islands

We found info on another website that says Joseph Foiles (b. Spain) married Mariah Redd (b. Spain) parents of Josephine Helen foiles (b. 2/22/1846 in VA d. 4/23/1917 110 Middleton St., Norfolk VA) married William Thomas Oakley (b. Spain, Port Mahon, Minorca) parents of Harry Leslie Oakley, William Ernest Oakley, Virgie aka Virgina Lee (Woodworth), Naomi (Coates), and Bessie Mae (Spady).
Virginia Lee is my husbands ggrandmother and we would be very interested in any info you have on this family.

Two points:

1) I have viewed the original of the marriage banns for Henry Preston Foiles and Georgiana Thomas Foiles. It is filed in the Chesapeake, Viginia Circuit Court, though it was originally part of the court records of Norfolk County, Virginia. I viewed the original while employed by the Circuit Court. Georgianna and Henry are buried in nearby Portsmouth, VA; but (alas), though the fact of their burials is known, the actual location is not.

2) Henry Preston Foiles served from 1861 to 1865 with the 3rd Virginia regiment of volunteer Confederate infantry. He was wounded at Sharpsburg, but remained in the army until 1865 when he was surrendered at Appomatox Court House by General Lee. (These records can be found via the Sons of Confederate Veterans and/or the Regimental history of the 3rd Virginia Volunteer Infantry that can be purchased over the net.

3) Indeed, Hank Foiles the baseball player is a direct descendant of Henry and Georgianna through one of their other sons.

Personal note: I am one of Georgianna and Henry's great, great gandson through their son Clifton, Clifton's son Charles, Sr. and his son, Charles, Jr.

I do not know if this site is still researching the Fiol surname or not. But found it interesting. As Domingo Fiol born Spain, living in Charlestown, MA married Calatine (or Catherine) Salas, daughter of Joseph and Margaret Don Carlos Salas.

Why I am interested in this family is that Joseph & Margarite Don Carlos Salas (Salis) had a daughter Margarite who married Philip Peckham. After his death she married Peter Gooding and removed to Norfolk, VA.

She was born in Port Mahon, Spain in 1819.

Curious about the Port Hahon, Spain connection.
