Hello Everyone,

I'm responding to everyone who placed a posting looking for Anakas in the Canora and Stenen areas in SK. My great great grandfather's name was Wasyl, and he and his wife (unsure of her name at this time) became naturalized citizens of Canada in 1902. They had a son, John, my great grandfather, who married Zowie Anaka around 1910. They had 5 children, Harry, Peter John, Mary, Anne and Ounphrey Anaka. Anne, my grandmother, moved to the Edmonton area with her husband around 1949, where they had 4 sons, Loren, Allen, Douglas and Richard. I am trying to locate the name of Wasyl's wife, some details of where they came from in the Ukraine and in what year. Hopefully these facts fill in the blanks for some of you looking for Anakas out there. Any questions please let me know and if you have any info (or think we might be related!) please let me know.

Thanks! Jessica

My father was born in Canora, his family moved to BC in 1956. His father's (William Anaka) family is from Canora, with some relatives still there. His mother is a Haluik from Insinger. My Baba has all our records of the family history and loves to talk so if anyone wants more info or anything let me know and I can't put you in contact with her. My knowledge is lacking!

I have access to a book called Stenen and District which includes many Anaka family stories.
There is one listed for Anaka, John W. and Zowie.
It says Zowie arrived from Austria in 1896 with her parents Mike and Mary, sisters Sadie and Katie and brothers Bill and John. They homesteaded in the Gorlitz area.
If you want copies, let me know and I can mail them.

Hi Jessica,

Mary Anaka was my grandmother (her son Wally is my Dad) and John Anaka was therefore also my great grandfather. I have always wondered why John and his wife (Zowie) had this asian look to them...almost Mongolian it seems. Is it just me or have you wondered about this yourself at times? Do you know where great great grandfather Wasyl and his wife came from?

Hi John,

I've actually never seen pictures of them! If you have any you would be able to post that would be amazing. I know that Wasyl and his wife came to Canada from the Ukraine via Poland. That's about as much as I know. There are some siberian people who look slightly asian (or so I've heard) so maybe there's a link there?

Hi Jessica - I will continue looking for the picture of John Anaka...I know I have it somewhere. It was taken in the summer of 1970 when we were visiting Nel and Ounphrey at their farm near Stenen.
