Several different spellings of "our" surname exist. It is difficult to know which is "correct". All I know about the origin is that it is a name derived from the Middle English - "nethere" and Old English "neodera" meaning - lower and cot meaning cottage. It means - "one who lived in a cottage at the lower end of a settlement".

The story I always got about the "corrupted" spelling was that it was a miscommunication at immigration. We pronounce it - Nethercut.

This is what I know about our family history: Bertram, my G-G grandfather possibly emmigrated from somewhere in Ireland. Mary Alice Patton was G-G grandmother. Together they moved to Saskatchewan from Dundalk, Ontario, Canada. Their 6 kids were: Clarence Austin-great uncle, Cyril Aubrey(Ted)-grandfather, Carl Montgomery-great uncle, Noami (Nonie)-great aunt, Herbert(Herb)-great uncle.

G-G grandfather Bertram died in 1939. G-G grandmother Alice died in 1968. Herb and Nonie are still alive and living in Regina, SK. They're both in their 80s now.

Marriages, kids, divorces, more kids, adopted kids, etc. and things get very confusing in the next generation and beyond...

I REALLY want to know what part of Ireland my ancestors came from. Are there still descendents in those areas? If not, what part(s) of the world did they go to?

Hi! You must be a descendent of my great-grandmother's brother, Bertram Neithercut. We are cousins! We are also related to the O'Leary's (Bertram's sister Lottie married James O'Leary, Lindsay, and I know that Nonie Neithercut O'Leary died very recently (she was once married to her first cousin, Frank O'Leary; they divorced). My great-grandmother was Bertram's and Lottie's sister, Frances Gertrude Neithercut Deyell who lived in Lindsay .... I have a very old Neithercut family tree -- not many dates, but lots of names. Would love to hear from you -- fryloridon@yahoo.ca Lori Fry

It was Bertram's father, Montgomery Neithercut, who immigrated from Ireland. Bertram and his five siblings were all born in Ontario after Montgomery married his wife, Charlotte Armstrong, in Victoria County. They raised their family near Dundalk.

We are related -- Bertram's sister Frances Gertrude was my great-grandmother. Herb Neithercut used to come from Saskatchewan to visit her and the family in Lindsay. Nonie and Herb were my grandmother's first cousins -- I know Nonie Neithercut O'Leary died recently, but Herb is still living and in a nursing home in Regina. I have a very old Neithercut family tree -- would love to hear from you, fryloridon@yahoo.ca Lori Fry

Lori,
I am trying to find info on my GGGGGrand mother, Mary Neithercut. She married an Ebinezer Rockhill in Warren co. Ohio in 1829 I think. They had only one child, Ashura Rockhill Foulks. Do you know of this family?
Thanks, Sherry
