Can anyone tell me if any of the Gosnells from the Glassy Mountain / Greenville area of South Carolina fought on the Confederate side during the Civil War?
I'm trying to figure out if one of my Gosnell ancestors was awarded the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC)'s Southern Cross of Honor after the war. This did not come from the Confederate government, but was commissioned and awarded by the UDC. My mom inherited one, but we have no clue where it came from. I figured a good place to start would be finding out who was a Confederate and who wasn't. Any information/guidance about who fought for which side, who didn't fight, etc. would be greatly appreciated. The tendency to reuse names (ex.: John) I've noticed in our family makes it a bit hard to use the "Civil War Soldiers and Sailors" system with any certainty.
By the way, my line includes Hulda Ann Gosnell Bridgeman (1867-1939)daughter of Charles Richard A. Gosnell (?-1912), son of Peter Gosnell Sr. (1815-1883).
