Hi there

I am hoping this lovely community can help me untangle some family lore:

Facts:
Grandma June Patton was born in 1929/IL to Francis Foster Patton and Dorothy Grace Brown (1897/IL - 1993/CA)

Dorothy's father was Frank Brown (mother Bryan but she died either in child-birth or shortly after and we have no info on her).

Myth? Legend? Undocumented Facts?

Frank Brown founded (possibly co-founded?) Ma Brown Pickles and later played a pivotal roll in Beatrice Foods. Frank named the company after his mother who made the best pickles in the entire world. Every bit of information I can find on Ma Brown Pickles indicates that the Dingee family founded the company, not the Brown family.

Does anyone know what the relationship was between the Dingee and Brown families? If there was one at all? Any insight at all would be very helpful.

Thanks

I have the answers to all of these questions, thanks to some magazine clippings and extensive geneological work by one of our mutual relatives. I am a grand daughter of
Frank Brown(called by his middle name, Olney. The first name "Frank" was derived from family members using a surname Francis. Olney was also a surname)
I could copy about a hundred pages of family history, including Squire Dingee/ Ma Brown Pickle history.

Are you a distant cousin to me, do you think? will send info maybe over the weekend or next week.

Squire Dingee Company was started in 1858 by Henry A. Dingee who had acquired the name "Squire" through his activities and farming in Wilmette, Illinois. My family history states that Colonel John Newton Francis came into contact with Dingee in 1881 in Chicago where he (Francis) had had a produce business since 1867. Col. J.N.F. lived with his daughter, Mrs David Paul Brown when Dingee brought pickles into his store from his farm. Dingee needed help with business problems and Col. J.N.F. could improve Dingee's banking and operation adjustment. They set up Incorporation of Squire Dingee Co. in 1886. Colonel Francis was active until his retirement in 1900 when he sold all his stock to Frank Arnold Brown and Harry Adams Brown.
from "who's who in chicago," 1926: "in june 1893 (Frank Arnold Brown) went to work for Squire Dingee Co., mfrs of pickles, vinegar, etc." Frank was still President of the Squire Dingee Co. when he "collapsed of heart disease, Aug 14, 1929." During his tenure, in 1924, the "Ma Brown" label was created.
(Sq. Dingee sold his company to the Brown brothers, Harry and Frank, in 1898)
It was in Sept. of 1958 that Squire Dingee Co., "manufacturers of Ma Brown pickles, preserves, and jellies," merged with Beatrice Foods Co., Chicago. The then president was F. Olney Brown and Chairman of the Board was Harry Adams Brown, his uncle. After the merger, my Gramps (Olney) served as consultant to Beatrice Foods (my Gramps would've been your Grandma June's uncle.)
The only "myth" part to your question might be the "best pickles in the world" part. This would be a good thing to find out before the older folks in our family forget the family lore.
