I am searching for my ancestors and have only been able to get back as far as my g/grandfather. His name was Thomas Kirwan, I found him the the 1900 New York census, Vol.158, E.D.627, sheet7, line 3. From the ages given in the census Thomas was born abt. 1854. His wife was Mary J. b. abt. 1862. They had five sons, Jno (John?)b. abt. 1877, Patrick b. abt.1887, Thomas F. (My grandfather)b. abt. 1891, Edward b. abt 1895, and Richard b. abt 1899. My grandfather Thomas F. married Margurite Flaherty and they had two sons my father John (Jack) and my uncle Robert (Bob). I live in Texas and it is nearly impossible to find any info from New York down here. If anyone has any information on this family please leave a message here or contact me at jorokir@seacove.net Thank you.

My Kirwans are from Thurles, Ireland and emigrated to Newburgh, Orange Co. NY in 1853. I do have some information on various Kirwans/Kerwins that lived in Newburgh in the late 1800s. I do remember that there was a Thomas Kirwan that was married to a Mary Shea and they had various children. It seems to me that he moved to Sing Sing NY in or around 1898-99. Don't know if he moved with family or not. If you are interested, let me know.
Robin

My name is John Kirwan and Robbie is my wife. I don't know how her name got on the original posting, I posted it not her. Rob, I recently sent you an email in answer to your reply. Robin, we have conversed via email before and have decided that your Thomas and mine are not the same. I have however discovered since my original posting that Thomas' wife Mary J. was Mary Jane Watchhorn and their son Thomas (my grandfather) was born May 19, 1891 in New York City. If any of this is familiar to you or anyone else who reads it please contact me. Thanks for your replies.

I wonder if there's a connection as I have the following Kirwan/Kerwan/Kirvan brothers:

John Kirwan/Kerwan/Kirvan, b. 1787, Galway, Ireland
Thomas Kirwan/Kerwan/Kirvan
Edward Kirwan/Kerwan/Kirvan

Per Robert Kirvan of Ontario, John arrived in Canada in 1810, at the age of 23. His point of arrival was the Province of Newfoundland. In 1817, he acquired 100 acres of land (Lot 14, Conc 1, Cavan Township, Ontario). It is said he crossed into Canada on foot. He was joined by his brothers, Thomas who arrived in 1819, and Edward who arrived in 1817.

Also found in an article were the names of John Kerwan and Edward Kerwan who were issued passes by the British Consul for their journey to Upper Canada. These passes were issued August 1817, which is the year they arrived in Cavan Township, Ontario (near Port Hope). In the statement it said they were natives of Wattington. (Bob Kirvan could not find a Wattington in Ireland, but found a Waddington in upstate New York, across the St. Lawrence River from Morrisburg, Ontario.) Bob Kirvan thinks their name change to Kirvan may have taken place on coming into Canada.

Please contact me if you think there's a link.

A lot has come to light since my wife made this posting back in 2001. Since then I have discovered that most of my family spells their last name Kirwin and they are scattered all over the U.S. If you have an ancestor named John, Patrick, Thomas, or Edward and your family is originally from N.Y. please contact me at jorokir43@yahoo.com, let's see if we are related.

Hi John,

Spelling does not count in this surname for sure! Also, "being from NY" can be misleading as most of our ancestors arrived in NY, stayed a few years and left - the problem is where they then went...

My line includes Patrick, b. Dublin, 1801 who arr. NY in 1847, and stayed thru at least 1850 before working the RR west to Indiana. His sons included John, Thomas and a Charles Edward.... so even the names do not necessarily get you very far!

As a Kirwin/an male, you would be an excellent addition to our Kirwin/an DNA Project: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Kirwan/

Do you have your ancestral charts posted where we can look at them and compare them? If not, I am happy to post them for you here: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~jmbhome/1kirwin.html
[my own charts are also posted there}

If, like many of us, you have not been able to place your Kirwin back in Irelnad, DNA is the best way to narrow the field...

Our Project is only getting going, but the more men we get samples from, the more success we will have!

Hope to hear from you!

Hi John,
I'm related to the John Kirwans of CastleHacket, Co Galway. My gggrandfather was Thomas Joseph Kirwan, born at CastleHacket c 1822. He came to the US prior to 1850 to either NYC or Boston. He then moved west to Calif where I live now. I'm still trying to find the exact link to the CH Kirwans.
I have a lot of information on the Kirwans of CH, Cregg and Dalgan branches. Are we related? Cindy
