Surnames: Nelson, Giordano, Villere
I am looking for any information on my gggrandfather, Wallace Joseph Nelson, who lived in Plaquemines Parish. He was married to Marie Louise Giordano Nelson. Their daughter, Marie Louise Nelson Villere, was my ggrandmother, with whom I was very close. I have found extensive information on the Giordano line but nothing on the Nelsons. Any information would be very much appreciated.

Do you know your grandfather's date of birth or date of death?

I found a Wallace J. Nelson who died August 19, 1953 in Orleans Parish in the state death record index and in the obituary index. The state death index says he was 83 years old; the obituary index says he was 94. If it's him, here's the information:

Orleans Parish Death Records, Volume 0 Page 5263

Obituary citation(s):
States, 1935-08-19, Pg. 4 col. 1

Item, 1953-08-19, Pg. 5 col. 2

Item, 1953-08-20, Pg. 5 col. 2

States, 1953-08-20, Pg. 4 col. 2

Times-Picayune, 1953-08-20, Pg. 2 col. 7

Times-Picayune, 1953-08-21, Pg. 2 col. 7

The online birth index lists a Wallace Nelson born 08/24/1869 to parents Henry Nelson and Mary Cassely (also listed as Cassedy, Cassserly, and Casoley on birth records for other children). In the online marriage index for New Orleans, there's a Wallace James Nelson who married a Louisa Giordano on October 21, 1895. The record can be found in Volume 18, page 669 of the Orleans Marriage Records.

There's a Wallace J. Nelson (age 60) in the 1930 census in New Orleans, with wife Louise M. Nelson (55), son Harold D. Nelson (24), and daughter Marie L. Nelson (22). He's listed as a salesman in a lumberyard, and his parents are listed as both being born in Louisiana. Marie's father is listed as being born in Italy, her mother in Louisiana. The image is blurry, but Harold's listed as a billing clerk and Marie as a stenographer. They lived on Louisa Street.

The same family is in the 1920 census in New Orleans, with children Lydia (23), Angelique (18), Annie (16), Harold (14), and Marie L. (12). This time Wallace's father is listed as having been born in Denmark and his mother in Ireland. Louise's parents are still listed as having been born in Italy and Louisiana. Wallace is listed as being a salesman of sewing machines, and Lydia & Angelique are listed as stenographers. They lived in Clouet Street.

In the 1900 census the family is on Rampart Street in New Orleans. Wallace's birthdate is listed as August 1869, Louise's as March 1876, Lydia M. as August 1896, and Anita G. as March 1898. Wallace's parents are still listed as having been born in Denmark and Ireland, and Marie's as Italy and Louisiana. At the time Marie is the mother of 2 children, both living. Wallace is listed as a barber.

In the 1880 census in New Orleans on Dauphine Street:

Hy (abbreviation for Henry) Nelson (44)
Mary Nelson, 40, wife
Octavo L. Nelson, 14, son
John Nelson, 12, son
Joseph W. Nelson, 10, son
Hy. Nelson, 7, son
Jos. Nelson, 5, son
W.H. Nelson, 2, son

Henry is a caulker. Octavo is an apprentice to Cistern M. (?), John works in C. Press (?).

Henry is listed as having been born in Bavaria, as were his parents. Mary and her parents were listed as having been born in Ireland.

1870 census in New Orleans:

Henry Nelson, 36, ship caulker, born in Prussia
Mary Nelson, 30, born in Ireland
Octave Nelson, 5

From the Orleans birth records, besides the one I posted earlier:

William Nelson born 04/06/1878 Volume 71 Page 1149

John Henry Nelson born 07/24/1867 Volume 46 Page 59

George Joseph Nelson born 10/28/1874 Volume 62 Page 930

Thanks you Barbara; this really does help! It would make sense that his mother was a Casserly as one of his daughters was Annie Casserly Nelson. His daughter, Marie Louise Nelson, was my great-grandmother. She passed on when I was 13, but I do remember her telling me that her father's family was Danish. Thanks so much for the information!!
