Walter Sweetman married Sophia Sandgathe. She was the sister of my great grandfather Johann Franz Hugo (Hugo) Sandgathe. My grandparents were Hugo’s daughter, Beth Sandgathe, and Phil Gervais. Phil and Beth Gervais’ farm was next door to a Sweetman farm, just east of Currie on Hwy 30.
I am trying to fill in the descendants of Franz Nicholas Sandgathe and Catharina Haferkamp. Those individuals were the parents to Hugo and Sophia. They had eight children total. I have the descendants of most of those siblings.
Sophia was the only Sandgathe sib to remain in the Currie area. The Sandgathe name is now centered in Oregon (Hugo) and Canada (the other sibs). I have very little information on the Sweetman line from Walter and Sophia and I would like to fill it in. Several others in the Sandgathe line who are doing genealogy work would also be interested in this information. What little information I have is below. I have a fair amount of Sandgathe information including partial ancestors for an additional six generations back from Sophia.
The Sandgathe’s came from Borbeck, Westphalia, Prussia (Germany). This was a small community just outside and on the northwest side of Essen. It is now just a neighborhood in Essen. Sophia was evidently born in Gelsenkirchen, Westphalia, Prussia. This community is close to Borbeck and just northeast of Essen. If you search Expedia.com, it will place both on a map. Also, there are some nice period maps (1880’s) available. The Atlas des Deutschen Reichs by Ludwig Ravenstein 1883 is richly detailed (and shows Borbeck). It is available on-line from the Memorial Library at the University of Wisconsin-Madison http://www.library.wisc.edu/etext/ravenstein
I have many of the descendents from the Sandgathe line (with some holes). It is an unusual last name; so far, it appears that most with that name are related.
Franz Nicholas Sandgathe (Hugo and Sophia’s father) was a captain in the Uhlan Calvary of the Prussian Army. He fought in the Franco-Prussian War. They came to America to keep their son out of the army and poor economic conditions in Germany. Katharina (Hugo and Sophia's mother) was tired of the men in the family dying in war, and encouraged him to start a new life in the west. In Germany, they were well off enough to have maids etc. They emigrated via New York with family in 1882, and settled in Currie, MN.
Franz Nicholas Sandgathe died in Salt Lake City, UT in 1889. We do not know what he was doing there when he died.
In 1900 or 1901 Hugo and Sophia's brother Felix, with their sister Paula and her husband William Donnelly, moved to Granum, Alberta. Another brother, Francis Nicholas Sandgathe followed shortly after. In 1902 Katharina arrived with Emil. Katharina died in 1916 from pneumonia after returning from a trip visiting Hugo in Oregon. Hugo arrived in Canada in 1909 to operate two steam-powered threshing machines. Hugo left Granum after the threshing was finished and went to Winnipeg. In 1910 he moved on, expecting to end up in California.
Hugo’s first wife, Eleanor Ewen, had died young (1906). Hugo left his daughter, Beth (age 9), with Eleanor’s sister, Anna Hoffman, to be raised. Hugo ended up in Oregon, married Anna Boller, and started another family. This is the source of the Oregon Sandgathe’s. The Canadian Sandgathe’s are from the rest of the family.
I have a family photo taken in 1874 in Germany with Hugo, Sophia, and Maria as young children. The first child, Elizabeth Lucia, had died prior to 1874. There are separate photos of Franz Nicholas Sandgathe in his Prussian army uniform and Katharina later in life.
