In the booklet "Jonesboro: A Historical Sketch" there is mention of surname Waldrop. Jonesboro was chartered in 1858 and became the county seat. Clayton county was formed from the eastern part of Fayette county and western part of Henry county. I thought it worth passing this information along since these people might be related to your James Henderson, Thomas and Elihu Nelson WALDROP's.

Jonesboro Academy - A deed dated July 12, 1848, Bk F pg 264, Fayette records transfers lot 6 in the 1st section, east of the railroad to Jonesboro Academy from Elijah P. Allen. Trustees of the academy were Andrew J. Brown, Abner Camp, and William Sparkman. Witnessed by John R. Waldrop and A. J. Monday, JP.

James E. Waldrop on the 1870 census as inhabitants of the Jonesboro area.
And 1880 J. L. H. Waldrop, (it says) was probably a farmer.

The Presbyterian Church organized Sept. 28, 1879:
J. L. H. Waldrop is among the 36 members.

In 1880 Jonesboro Lodge # 187,K.T.H.;
J. L. H. Waldrop was one of five officer's.

March 17, 1881 - listed appointments to the county Board of Education - James A Chambers succeeded A. F. Guice; W. R. Ward, J. L. H. Waldrop; B. Dean, J. W. Mann; R. M. Lasseter, J. M. Huie, and D. S. Stone, James Sneed.

WWI April 1917:
James Edward Waldrop as enlistee for the Navy.

This booklet lists some of the names who were confederate Soldiers, but no Waldrop's are named. The writer says the complete company roll is in volume 2 of the "Roster Of Confederate Soldiers 1861 - 1865" by Miss Lillian Henderson. And says the book is in public and school libraries.

Sorry it doesn't list a sheriff's name.
Good Luck!!

James Henderson Waldrop (Sheriff)

The "History of Clayton County Georgia 1821 - 1983" p 520-521 lists the "Sheriff" as a descendant of Captain James Waldrop c. 1735-1799 (Revolutionary War soldier). The article only lists the "Sheriff's" date of birth as 1814. There is a wealth of information here.

The historical society in Clayton County has a room in our history center dedicated to the sheriffs and sheriff department of Clayton County. We have pictures of most, but do not have a photo of our first sheriff. If anyone knows of a picture of J.H. Waldrop that we could use to memorialize him in our history center, we would certainly appreciate it!
