My grandfather Arthur Surtees was born in 1895 and was the youngest out of Robert, George, James, Joseph, Jack (or John) Elizabeth, Florence, Susan and Annie (there may have been another sister but my grandfather didn't know of his sisters existence because their father Robert Riddell Surtees would not allow their names to be mentioned after they refused to look after the family following their mother's death. Their mother's name was Annie (Watmore) and they lived at Albion Row when they first married in 1876. I want to find out more about R R Surtees father John who was an ironfoundry foreman. I know his father was William who was married to Margaret Cockburn from Durham. Can anyone fill me in on John or William? Thank you

Dear Harry, Thank you so much for your prompt reply. I know little about My great grandfather's father John, so this is of great interest to me. I know he lived at 42 Stanhope Place in 1871 so this could well be him especially as Robert had moved to Surrey by then which is probably why he isn't mentioned. I am very grateful to you for your help and I shall check this with my uncle but it does indeed sound as if this is my great, great grandfather John's family!

I have checked and this is definately my family. My grandfather was the son of Robert Riddell Surtees who was the son of John and Elizabeth Riddell. Robert R. moved to Surrey and they had about 10 or 11 children, my grandfather was the youngest. I imagine Elizabeth died because john remarried around 1871 to Mary but I don't know her surname. I'd like to find out about Elizabeths family if possible anyone out there any info? I'm new to this and I haven't a clue where to look! Thanks.

Hello Jenny,

I don't have any connection with SURTEES, I was just helping out with a Surtees query from Tina Godden.
She had asked the first question about her family and it is in the same thread as you found my message.
Drop her an e-mail and she may be able to help.

Good luck,

Harry

I am a SURTEES

My name is Jenny Surtees (b.1982) and i stumbled accross your messages whilst my collegue was researching her own name. I was just wondering if our family fits anywhere into yours.

My dad's name is Phillip Micheal Surtess(b.1958) in Stockport, Manchester. His father is Thomas Foster Surtees n(b.1925) and unfirtunatly, i am not too sure where he was born.

I hope that this information may help someone who is doing their research.

Jenny.

Our Elizabeth Surtees was born at Lamesley and christened at St Helen's Lamesley 28.08.1788, the daughter of Ralph and Isabella Surtees (Nee Lumley). I am interested to hear of the whickham Surtees family; I hope we have not followed the wrong line! The christian name Ralph comes down from the 1500's in the Surtees line and is present even to this generation. Elizabeth & Edward's eldest son, my 3x grt g'father, was Ralph Surtees Pearson b. 1819, Handenhold, Chester-le-Street. Are there any Ralph's in the Whickham listings? Thank you for your help. Any other help always appreciated!

Hello Dee,

I am not researching SURTEES, just answering a posting. I have a fiche of Lamesley St.Andrew Burials from 1730 to 1798, with about 26 SURTEES on it.
I don't know if there is a connection, but an Elizabeth SURTEES was baptised on Dec.25th.1782 at Whickham. Parents: Thomas and Grace.

Harry
