This might help some of you. My great grandfather, Augustus Hedtke, came to Texas before 1900.He came from Alsace-Lorraine ( which sometimes was in France and sometimes in Germany), spoke German. He came through either Galveston or Indianola, TX. He traveled with a sister, they came to Texas to be with an older sister who was married and living in Kurten, Texas(near College Station). when he grew up he settled in Rugne, Texas and farmed. He was a very successful farmer and had farms in Mexico also. He lost these farms to the revolution during the time of Pancho Villa. Augustus was married four times and had I believe 27 kids! He also had a house in San Antonio and I believe had a biergarten there for a while. My grand mother is the second youngest child, she had a younger brother who died in WWI. She is 90 this year. The descendant's of Augustus are pretty well organized and have regular reunions here in Texas.
