About ten years ago, my husband, Hugh F. Toner, Jr., was able to obtain from the Catholic Archdiocese of Armagh, baptismal certificates for his grandfather, Patrick Toner, and three of his four siblings B all baptized between 1855 and 1865 as well as baptismal certificates for Patrick=s father, Francis Toner, and four of his siblings, all baptized between 1814 and 1825.

AChildren of Patrick and Ann Dowling ( aome certificates read ADarling=) Toner@
John Toner 2/20/1814
Francis Toner 4/20/1815
Peter Toner 7/22/1817
Patrick Toner 3/2/1823
Joseph Toner 7/26/1825

Unfortunately, for almost ten years we have been trying to find out exactly WHERE in Armagh these ancestors lived, and we are hoping that you can help us. At that time perhaps the ACatholic Parish of Armagh@ covered most of the land of the present County Armagh,. Peter stayed in Ireland. John and Joseph Toner came to America probably in the 1840's or fifty. They may have stayed in the state of Pennsylvania awhile, but we have records of them filing a land patent in Nebraska Territory, USA in 1856. Patrick and Francis Toner and Francis= familycame to the United States in 1872 Bwe have seen a copy of the ship=a manifesto.

.If you have access to a Census of Northern Ireland or a Griffith=s Valuation for 1830, 1840 and perhaps 1850 all the names of that generation of Toner brothers should appear

John, Joseph, and Patrick Toner never married. We do not whether Peter, who stayed in Ireland ever married. either. Between 1850 and 1855, Francis married Ann Hughes who may have been from County Monaghan, possibly a part of that county later linked to Armagh. The Cathilic Archdiocese of Armgh in 1995 also sent us patismal records for four of Francis and Ann Hughes= Toner=s . five children

MaryAnn Toner 8/31/1856 Baptized in Tynan, Co Armagh
Patrick Toner 3/23/1859 Baptized in Parish of Armagh
Margaret Toner 8/26/1862 Baptized in Parish of Armagh
John Toner 9/5/1864 Baptized in Parish of Armagh
Another daughter, Elizabeth was born between MaryAnn and Patrick and came to
the US with her family in 1872 but no baptismal record was sent to us for her.

Francis Toner, his wife Ann Hughes Toner, children MaryAnn, Elizabath and Patrick as well as

Francis= brother, Patrick Toner, should appear on a census or Griffith=s Valuation for 1860 if there was one. All of these names plus the names of Francis Toner=s two youngest B John Toner and Elizabeth Toner should have appeared in a 1970 British census of Northern Ireland or Griffith=s Valuation

Patrick Toner, son of Francias and Ann Hughes Toner married Mary Ann Hughes in Omaha, Nebraska, USA in 1898. Mary Ann was born in St. Louis , Missouri to Peter and Ellen Doran Hughes. Peter and his two brothers married three Doran sisters

Peter Hughes married Ellen Doran born 1828 Where?
Owen Hughes married Brigid Doran born 1826 Where? Bessbrook? USA?
Bernard Hughes born1824 married Mary Doran born 1828 Omaha, NE. USA

.While we do not have baptismal certificates for either Peter or Ellen, we do have letters from my husband=s late aunt who visited the Hughes= old homestead in Armagh in the 1920's and as well as a letter sent in the 1970's from a woman living in Mullaghbawn, Newry the widow of the man who took my husband=s aunt and her cousin to a place she referred to as AAmmakane@ and place and she also mentions Bessbrook

The three Hughes borthers as well as the Doran sisterss and two of their siblings::
Michael Doran married Ellen McNulty Kileavy Parish (?)
Margaret Doran never married

should be on a census or Griffith=s for 1830, 1840 or 1850. Michael Ellen Mc Nulty Doran were still in Armagh until they came to Omaha, Nebraska in 1870. Michel and Ellen had five children
baptized in Armagh before they left Ireland.

We have been trying for about a decade to locate from where in Armagh these ancestors came. We hope very much that you can help us

Sincerely,

Hugh and Maureen Toner
