A funeral mass to celebrate the life of Eli Jones, Jr., 86, of the Snook/Somerville area,TEXAS are set for 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 2, 2008 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in College Station TX with Fr. Michael O'Connor as celebrant. Interment will be at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday in Houston Memorial Gardens South Cemetery in Pearland TX. A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday night at the church. Mr. Jones will be be in state at the church from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Visitation will be Tuesday, from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. with the family present at Strickland Funeral Home in Somerville TX. Mr. Jones died Saturday evening in a motor vehicle accident near his home.
Eli was born in Sulphur, Louisiana on July 11, 1921, the son of Eli Jones, Sr. and Della Mae Murphy Jones. He attended school in Sulphur and served in the United States Army during World War II. He married Elvira Foote on May 29, 1947 and together they created a legacy. Mr. Jones was a rancher, a community leader, a businessman, and an entrepreneur in every aspect of his life. He was a strong family man, a member of the Marion Mays American Legion Post #455 of Somerville, a very active member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church of College Station and a 4th degree knight in the St. Thomas Aquinas Knights of Columbus. He was known as "The Programmer" because he was always ready with a plan of action for anything in which his family was involved.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his step-mother, Fannie Mae Jones; four brothers, Elward Jones, Howard Jones, Seward Jones and Leonard T. Jones.
Survivors include his wife of sixty-one years, Elvira Jones of Snook/Somerville TX; two daughters and sons-in-law, Elaine Jones Phillips and her husband Samuel of Edna, Texas; JoAnn Jones Burbridge and her husband Oliver of Houston; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Eli Jones, III and his wife Fern of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Kirk Jones of Bryan; five grandchildren, Monique, and her husband, Farsheed Sedeh of Katy, Erick Land of Salt Lake City, Utah, Necia Jones of Baytown, Chris and Stefanie Jones of Humble, and Elicia and Ryan Hunter of Albany, New York; four great grandchildren, Armani Orphey of Katy, Ammad Fondal of Katy, Jase Powell of Baytown and Justice Powell of Baytown; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and an extremely large number of friends.
Family members have requested that memorials be made to the Knights of Columbus of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church.
